Side Gigs

Hi,
I'm an American coming to A town near Cuenca in July. I'll be there for 5 months. I'm learning the language, though I don't expect to be fluent upon my arrival. My question is, do you think it's possible to find little side jobs, like babysitting for expats, things that perhaps won't take jobs away from locals?
My other question is, how might I contribute to the community while there? Considering I will not be fluent but hopefully able to converse, are the volunteer opportunities for an American?
