If you’re planning to enroll in the public healthcare system in Serbia, this article covers the requirements for foreigners to be able enroll in the public healthcare system, the steps involved and more.

The Republic of Serbia offers a public healthcare system known as the Republic Health Insurance Fund (RHIF). This system is designed to provide comprehensive healthcare services to all residents of Serbia, including foreigners who have obtained residency status. The quality of healthcare in Serbia is generally good, with a wide range of services available, from primary care to specialized treatments. However, like any public healthcare system, it can sometimes be overwhelmed, leading to long waiting times for certain procedures.

Healthcare in Serbia is funded through a combination of state budget, compulsory health insurance contributions, and out-of-pocket payments by patients. The compulsory health insurance is mandatory for all residents, including foreigners with residency status. Most people in Serbia use the public healthcare system, although some also opt for private healthcare services for more immediate access to certain treatments.

Eligibility for Foreigners

Foreigners are eligible to enroll in the Serbian public healthcare system if they have obtained residency status in Serbia. This includes those who are in the country for work, study, or other long-term purposes. Tourists and short-term visitors are not eligible for the public healthcare system and should ensure they have adequate travel insurance to cover any medical expenses.

Steps for Enrolling in the Public Healthcare System

  1. Obtain Residency Status: The first step to enrolling in the Serbian public healthcare system is to obtain residency status. This can be done through the Serbian Ministry of Interior Affairs.
  2. Register with the Republic Health Insurance Fund: Once you have obtained residency status, you can register with the RHIF. This involves submitting a completed application form along with supporting documents such as your residency permit and proof of address.
  3. Pay Health Insurance Contributions: After registering with the RHIF, you will need to start paying health insurance contributions. The amount you pay will depend on your income and employment status.
  4. Receive Health Insurance Card: Once your registration is complete and your first contribution has been paid, you will receive a health insurance card. This card will allow you to access healthcare services through the public healthcare system.

It’s important to note that even with public health insurance, some services may require out-of-pocket payments. These can include certain medications, dental care, and some specialized treatments.

Alternative Options

If you’re not satisfied with the public healthcare system in Serbia, or if you’re not eligible to enroll, there are alternative options available. Many foreigners choose to take out private health insurance, which can provide access to private healthcare providers. These providers often offer shorter waiting times and a wider range of services, although at a higher cost.

Whether you choose to use the public healthcare system or opt for private health insurance, it’s important to ensure you have adequate coverage to meet your healthcare needs while living in Serbia.
