Expat Advice: Moving to Cape Town, South Africa

Comments Print

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Cape Town

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

My family, More photos, Native forest

I could have left my winter clothes behind and made my suitcase lighter - doesnt really get cold here. I really only moved here with a backpack and a bag so I need everything I brought with me!

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

Don't bring too many big items as the exchange is still good (even coming from NZ) and it is cheaper to buy here. Check with the local police station in the area you are looking in to find out what the crime is like there. Spend time in that area getting the feel for it and for the traffic if you are working in he city!

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

I don't know any expats here in South Africa at all - only been here 4 months and not so easy to meet people. Its a free standing house with a big yard and a pool - lovely!!

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

Wanted somewhere that was close to the beach (5 mins away) somewhere not too close to the city but not too far (15min drive away from city central) and somewhere that felt safe. Table View has all that going for it and I really love it here.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

Haven't lived in NZ for a while but compared to UK and Ireland and US where I lived it is much cheaper (except food) - I could never have the lifestyle anywhere else that I have here.
