Parent's Review of American School Foundation in Mexico City, Mexico

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School Foundation

In what town or city is this school located?

Mexico City

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American (AP), Mexican (SEP) and IB

What grade levels are represented at this school?

pre-school - 12th grade

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most children come by car. There is a bus service, but the behavior on the buses is so bad that many parents will tackle the horrid traffic and drive their children themselves.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

OK facilities. There is remodeling going on which will help. The campus is quite lovely. There is a huge after school program with sports and fine arts and language opportunities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing was done to help my child. There are no services for repatriation.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a very good parent/teacher organization. The Middle School offered some very fun dances for the kids which were well supervised and attended. There are some great Art Fairs, and various all school functions throughout the year complete with music and lots of great food.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

This is a very intense school with lots of homework. The best thing is the mandatory spanish for non spanish speakers. My child is fluent in spanish and is continuing back home to study this language. The school is expensive and very large. Not much individual attention with classes of 25 kids even in the lower school. The new IB program seems to be very interesting. The school is mostly Mexican and some of the ex-pat kids experience a lot of prejudice and it can be hard for kids who do not have a lot of money.
