What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

One thing we have really noticed about living in the UK (outside of London) is how much we feel like outsiders even though we are English speaking Anglosaxons. It has been very hard to make friends and become part of the community as we feel a bit of the cold shoulder and the distance that the locals put between us. After living in other countries like Japan and Australia, England has definately been the hardest to live in due to cost of living and lack of social support.
