An Expat Talks about Moving to Scholcher, Martinique

Jan 04, 2019

Le Diamant Beach, Martinique

An expat talks about moving to Martinique. She advises that newcomers take traffic into account when deciding where to live. With 7 kids, this expat ended up picking a place near the grocery store to make life easier.

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Scholcher

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

I really wish I back up copy of my birth certificate, my favorite book, and my shot records... I really should have left my coat, my tablet, and my cowboy boots!

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

Try to stay close to the grocery store if you're with a family as stores close early and traffic can be extremely damaging to your day! Be prepared with your health records, and extra copies of everything!

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

We live in an apartment. This is very common here in Martinique. Most homes double as apartments as well.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

It took us sometime to find the right neighborhood. The carribeans aren't like USA. Most areas are really simalar. We had to change our expectations on focus on our overall needs not wants. For example - with seven kids it's more important to live next to the grocery store rather than the playground.

As an expat in Martinique, health insurance is an important consideration. Take a minute to get a quote from our expat health insurance partner, Integra Global.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

Housing cost are double the amount in comparison to USA. A typical 3 bedroom apartment in Missouri could cost you around $500-$1000. Here no less than $800 to start. It's very common for a three bedroom small apartment to cost €1200 average.
