Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Cyprus.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Cyprus.

Requirements for Foreigners to Drive Legally in Cyprus

Foreigners visiting or living in Cyprus can drive legally with a valid international driving license or a valid national driving license from their country of residence for a certain period. However, after this period, they must obtain a local Cypriot driving license. The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region.

Driving License Requirements Based on Stay Duration

  • Visitors and tourists can use their international or national driving license for up to 6 months.
  • Foreign residents can use their national driving license for up to 6 months from the date of their last entry into Cyprus.

Process for Obtaining a Local Cypriot Driving License

After the allowed period, foreign residents must obtain a local driving license by following these steps:

  • Application Form: Obtain and fill out an application form (T.O.M. 28) from the Department of Road Transport or a Citizen Service Centre.
  • Residency Proof: Provide proof of residency, such as a utility bill or rental agreement.
  • Valid Driving License: Present a valid national driving license from your country of residence.
  • Photographs: Bring two passport-sized photographs.
  • Medical Certificate: Obtain a medical certificate from a registered doctor in Cyprus.
  • Theory Test: Pass a theory test on traffic signs and the Highway Code (available in English and Greek).
  • Driving Test: Pass a practical driving test. Some exemptions may apply based on the country of origin.
  • Fees: Pay the applicable fees for the theory test, driving test, and license issuance.

Once all the requirements are met, the Department of Road Transport will issue the Cypriot driving license. Foreign residents should familiarize themselves with local traffic rules and regulations to ensure safe driving in Cyprus.
