Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in Poland

Foreigners from European Union (EU) or European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries can use their domestic driver's license in Poland without any time limitations. However, those from outside the EU or EFTA can use their domestic driver's license for up to 185 days. After this period, they must obtain a Polish driver's license.

The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region within Poland.

Process for Obtaining a Polish Driver's License

If a foreigner needs to obtain a Polish driver's license, here is the process:

• Register at the voivodeship office: The foreigner must first register their stay in Poland at the voivodeship office (Urz?d Wojewódzki).

• Medical examination: Undergo a medical examination to obtain a medical certificate confirming fitness to drive. This can be done at any licensed medical center.

• Translation of driver's license: Have the original driver's license translated into Polish by a sworn translator. This is necessary for the theoretical exam exemption.

• Application submission: Submit the application for a Polish driver's license at the municipal office (Urz?d Miasta or Urz?d Gminy). The following documents are required:

  • Valid ID or passport
  • Residence card or visa
  • Original driver's license with translation
  • Medical certificate
  • Two recent photographs (35x45 mm)

• Theoretical exam exemption: Foreigners who hold a valid driver's license from another country are typically exempt from the theoretical exam.

• Practical exam: Depending on the country of origin and the agreements between Poland and that country, the foreigner may need to pass a practical driving exam. This is usually conducted at a driving school (O?rodek Szkolenia Kierowców).

• Issuance of Polish driver's license: After passing the practical exam (if required), the Polish driver's license will be issued and can be collected at the municipal office.
