Tips for Expats Driving in Lahti

2. Winter Driving
Winters in Finland can be harsh, and driving conditions can be challenging due to snow and ice. It's recommended to have a car with good winter tires. Also, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with winter driving techniques and always keep a snow brush, ice scraper, and possibly a shovel in your car.
3. Parking in Lahti
Parking in Lahti is generally not a problem. There are plenty of parking spaces available in the city center and residential areas. However, parking fees may apply in the city center. Always check the parking signs for information about parking fees and restrictions.
4. Driving License
Foreigners can drive in Finland with an international driving license for up to six months. After that, you will need to obtain a Finnish driving license. To do this, you will need to pass a driving test (theory and practical) in Finnish or Swedish. Some driving schools offer courses in English.

As for the type of car, it depends on your needs. If you plan to stay mostly in the city, a small to medium-sized car would be sufficient. However, if you plan to travel around the country, especially in winter, a 4WD car might be a better option.

Finland has a lot of wildlife, including moose and deer, which can sometimes venture onto the roads, especially in rural areas. Always be vigilant, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active.
7. Use of Navigation Systems
It's recommended to use a navigation system while driving in Lahti, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Most navigation systems have up-to-date information about speed limits, traffic conditions, and roadworks.
