Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Casablanca.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Casablanca can be a challenging experience for expats. The traffic is often heavy and chaotic, with drivers frequently ignoring traffic rules. It's not uncommon to see cars double parked, running red lights, or driving in the wrong direction. Therefore, it's essential to be alert and cautious at all times.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Smaller cars are recommended for driving in Casablanca due to the heavy traffic and narrow streets. A compact car is easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to explore the countryside or go on road trips, a 4x4 might be a better option.

3. Parking in Casablanca

Finding parking in Casablanca can be difficult, especially in the city center. Most parking spaces are metered, and the cost can add up quickly. However, there are also private parking lots and garages available. It's advisable to have some change on hand for parking fees.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Morocco with an international driving permit for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Moroccan driver's license. It's important to always carry your license, passport, and car registration when driving.

5. Obtaining a Moroccan Driver's License

To get a Moroccan driver's license, you will need to pass a driving test. The test is conducted in Arabic or French, so if you don't speak these languages, you might need a translator. You will also need to provide a medical certificate, a residency certificate, and four passport-sized photos. It's advisable to contact a local driving school for assistance with the process.

6. Road Conditions

Road conditions in Casablanca can vary. Major roads and highways are generally in good condition, but smaller streets can be narrow and poorly maintained. Be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and animals on the road, especially in residential areas.

7. Safety Measures

Always wear your seatbelt and avoid using your phone while driving. Be especially careful at night, as street lighting can be poor. Also, be aware that the legal alcohol limit for driving in Morocco is zero, so avoid drinking if you plan to drive.
