Summary: Making the move to Cambodia? One critical choice you'll face is between local health insurance and expat health insurance. Our article provides a comprehensive comparison of both, enriched with insights from expats in Cambodia on their personal insurance decisions.

Cambodia's system is still developing, and health insurance is not yet widespread among locals. For expats and digital nomads, understanding the health insurance landscape is crucial to ensure adequate medical coverage during their stay.

Health Insurance Companies in Cambodia

Several health insurance companies operate in Cambodia, with some of the most popular being Forte Insurance, Infinity Insurance, and Asia Insurance. These companies cater primarily to locals but also offer plans for expats. Forte Insurance is known for its comprehensive health plans, while Infinity Insurance provides flexible and affordable options. Asia Insurance is recognized for its extensive network of healthcare providers. Expats are eligible to purchase health insurance from these companies, but the coverage and benefits may vary compared to specialized expat health insurance.

Expat Health Insurance in Cambodia

Many expats living in Cambodia opt to buy specialized expat health insurance. This is often because expat health insurance providers offer more comprehensive coverage, including medical evacuation and repatriation benefits, which are crucial in a country where medical facilities may not meet international standards. Additionally, expat health insurance plans typically provide coverage in multiple countries, making them suitable for those who travel frequently or maintain residences in more than one location.

Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance

Expats and digital nomads in Cambodia typically prefer specialized expat health insurance providers over local insurance companies. This is mainly due to the broader coverage, higher limits, and additional benefits tailored to the needs of expats. Local health insurance plans may not fully cover treatments at international clinics and hospitals preferred by expats, or may have lower coverage limits. However, some expats might still opt for local insurance if they plan to stay long-term and want a more affordable option.

Considerations When Choosing Health Insurance Overseas

When deciding on health insurance while living overseas, there are several factors to consider. One key aspect is whether the insurer offers direct billing, where the insurance company pays the hospital or clinic directly, or if you are required to pay upfront and submit claims for reimbursement. Other considerations include the extent of coverage, especially for pre-existing conditions, the ease of claiming processes, and the insurance company's reputation for customer service and support.

Expats talk about Health Insurance in Cambodia

"I don't have health insurance. The cost of medical care is quite low. A typical consultation is typically $20. PS I would no longer recommend Sihanoukville. 10,000+ Chinese have moved there and buying up hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and land. It's not the pleasant beach town it used to be," commented one expat living in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
