Weather: Lake Atitlán's highland location means cool temperatures year-round, with daytime highs typically in the 70s Fahrenheit and nights dropping into the 50s. The rainy season runs May through October; the dry season December through April brings clearer skies and calmer water.

Lake Atitlán sits in a volcanic caldera in Guatemala's western highlands, ringed by three volcanoes that rise sharply from the water's edge. The lake itself—Guatemala's largest—stretches across 125 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,562 meters, creating a landscape of dramatic vertical geography and sudden weather shifts. The town of Lake Atitlán (also called Panajachel, the largest settlement on the shore) functions as the hub for visitors and expats, though dozens of smaller Maya villages dot the shoreline, each with distinct textiles, languages, and traditions. The water changes color throughout the day—deep blue at midday, slate gray under clouds, almost black at dusk. Markets overflow with local produce, woven goods, and handicrafts. The pace is slower than Guatemala City but faster than the remote villages accessible only by boat. Tourism has reshaped the economy over decades, bringing restaurants, hostels, and tour operators alongside traditional agriculture and fishing. The indigenous Maya population maintains strong cultural practices despite external pressures, and the lake remains central to daily life—transport, food, livelihood, and identity all flow through it.
