Lake Atitlán sits in a volcanic caldera in Guatemala's western highlands, ringed by three volcanoes that rise sharply from the water's edge. The lake itself—Guatemala's largest—stretches across 125 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,562 meters, creating a landscape of dramatic vertical geography and sudden weather shifts. The town of Lake Atitlán (also called Panajachel, the largest settlement on the shore) functions as the hub for visitors and expats, though dozens of smaller Maya villages dot the shoreline, each with distinct textiles, languages, and traditions.
