Parent's Review of Cambridge English School in Kuwait City, Kuwait

Submitted by eugenej

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Cambridge English School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuwait City

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British

What grade levels are represented at this school?

KG - Year 11

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus, car (difficult parking)

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Limited or not well utilised. There is a swimming pool but it is not used much, 4 times / year perhaps. There is a basketball court but no other sports facilities. There are computer rooms. Very small classrooms for so many children.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

I do not recommend this school for a native English speaking child. My son started in Year 4 and most of his classmates were unable to converse in English without using Arabic. The school is not really an English school, but a second language English school. The British curriculum is not really followed, because of the disparity between fluency and age I guess. I removed my son and he is now at The English School, which is more suited to an expat student.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The families are mostly Egyptian and Kuwaiti so there are few socialising opportunities from an English-speaking perspective. The international teachers speak English, but almost half of them are second language English speakers.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I wouldn't use this school if you can avoid it. The teachers are mostly good but they seem unhappy and certainly don't put in extra effort for your child's learning needs. The members of management are not particularly impressive. I witnessed the head of primary shouting at a parent in front of children one day after school.
