Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Narva.

1. Understanding the Driving Rules

Driving in Narva is generally safe and straightforward. The traffic rules are similar to those in most European countries. The driving is on the right side of the road, and seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. It's also important to note that headlights must be on at all times, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.

2. Car Recommendation

As for the type of car, it really depends on your personal needs and preferences. Compact cars are often recommended for city driving due to their fuel efficiency and ease of parking. However, if you plan on exploring the countryside or driving in winter conditions, a 4x4 might be a better option.

3. Parking in Narva

Parking in Narva is generally not a problem. There are plenty of parking spaces available, both on-street and in parking lots. However, in the city center, you may need to pay for parking. The cost is usually quite reasonable, but it's always a good idea to have some coins on hand for the parking meters.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Estonia with an international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid national driving license. This is valid for up to six months. After that, you will need to obtain an Estonian driving license.

5. Obtaining an Estonian Driving License

To get an Estonian driving license, you will need to pass a theory test and a practical driving test. The tests are available in several languages, including English. You will also need to provide a medical certificate confirming that you are fit to drive. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and conditions.

6. Be Prepared for Winter Driving

Winters in Estonia can be harsh, with heavy snowfall and icy roads. Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 1, but it's recommended to have them on from October to April. Always keep a snow brush, ice scraper, and a small shovel in your car. Also, be prepared for shorter daylight hours in winter.

7. Be Aware of Wildlife

Estonia has a lot of wildlife, including moose and deer, which can sometimes venture onto the roads, especially in rural areas. Be particularly cautious when driving at dawn and dusk, when animals are most active.
