Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Puerto Montt.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Puerto Montt, can be a bit challenging for newcomers due to the different driving culture. Chilean drivers are known for their aggressive driving style, so it's important to stay alert and cautious. The roads are generally in good condition, but traffic can be heavy, especially during rush hours.

2. Car Recommendation

As for the type of car, it depends on your needs and preferences. If you plan to explore the surrounding areas and go on road trips, a 4x4 vehicle might be a good choice due to the varying road conditions. However, for city driving, a compact car would be more suitable due to its fuel efficiency and ease of parking.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Puerto Montt can be a bit difficult, especially in the city center during peak hours. However, there are several paid parking lots available. The cost of parking is not overly expensive, but it can add up if you park in the city center regularly.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Chile with an international driving permit for up to 90 days. After that, you will need to obtain a Chilean driver's license. It's important to always carry your passport or a copy of it along with your international driving permit while driving.

5. Obtaining a Chilean Driver's License

To get a Chilean driver's license, you will need to pass a written test, a practical driving test, and a medical exam. The process can be quite lengthy and requires a good understanding of Spanish as the tests are usually not available in English. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and conditions.

6. Road Safety

Always remember to wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers are also wearing theirs. Speed limits are strictly enforced in Chile, and there are frequent police checkpoints. Also, it's illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless you have a hands-free system.

7. Car Insurance

It's mandatory to have car insurance in Chile. Make sure to have all the necessary documents in your car at all times, including your driver's license, car registration, and insurance papers.
