My life journey rebound occurred in 2016. Single, spiritual, very open minded.
Physically fit and conditioned for all that Mother Nature offers and will remain so. I have decided Belize will be my residency of choice. Single, searching for that special gal to share and create lifelong memories with. As well, I will be the eyes on the ground for a close friend searching for a revenue home with 3+ bedrooms and bathrooms. And a decent location to establish a "unique" Diner Club concept.

Hi! I’ve been wanting to move since 2019 but it seems something always comes up however I’ve recently discovered that if you want something you just have to go for it so at the very least I can look into it and see what steps need to be taken to get the ball rolling! So I’m just here collecting information. Hello to all and happy safe travels!

Hello, I'm am one month out from moving to Belize permanently. I am also from Colorado but the western slope, Montrose to be exact. I've done all the exploring from one end of the country to the other over the past 3 years and picked the Cayo area. It is cheaper than the coast or Cayes and yet only a couple hours away when I need a beach and blue water fix. Caye Caulker and San Pedro didn't really impress me. Way too crowded and not a lot to do outside of the bars or being on the water. Placencia was great with beautiful beaches and now that the coastal highway is complete, it's a fast trip up to Belize City. If you want more bang for your buck, try the Toledo area. I'm building between San Ignacio and Spanish Lookout at Carmelita Gardens. I like the whole idea of living off-grid and the real sense of community they share. We have several Coloradans living there. As for moving your stuff down you can buy or rent a container and ship from Houston as it's the closest port, but be prepared to pay! I'm taking my SUV stuffed full of household items and shipping it overland at half the price. Because I'm QRP-approved, there won't be any duty to pay for my car or stuff, which really adds up. I don't believe you can bring your plants in because anything live has to be approved by the BAHA, which approves your pets. Manifests of what you're bringing in have to be submitted to the customs department 3 weeks in advance, so you better start getting ready. Good luck, maybe I'll see you there!

Hi! We recently visited several cities in Belize and are considering purchasing a place to use regularly until we are able to retire there full time. We would love a seaside village and are open to different areas. Any advice from expats that have made the transition would be appreciated.

I'm a 58 yr old textile developer/engineer consultant for the last 11 yrs but in the outdoor/sportswear biz for +25 yrs and the last of my kids graduated this past May of 2023 now an empty nester and want to get abroad. In my vocation I'v been fortunate to travel abroad but not so much in mexico or s.america believe it or not and my race is mexican american. I still have my consultant business and work w/Asia quite a bit therefore some travel is required for sure still in the US for meetings & tradeshows on behalf of the Asian vendors to meet & greet + working w/US brands. Thus I can work from anywhere but need to travel back to the US from time to time w/in a given year for no more than a length of a week or 10 days. I've sold my US home in lovely Longmont Colorado (10 miles east of resort/college town Boulder CO. and thus will have some funds to solidify my possibility of purchasing some very 'modest' and live in Belize or surrounding area (Caye Caulker / Placencia - even possible???) . I am looking to move w/in this year still aka next 2-3 months so any insight to what a move like this all entails w/b great! I've tried to minimalize but do have a 10x20 storage w/furniture and 'stuff' I would love to ship/take with me where ever I go - inc. plants I've grown up with for the last 16 yrs!

My husband and I are currently living in Savannah, Ga. We are both in our 40's (mid-late), have three grown children, and are fatigued by the intense lifestyle of the US. Also the political landscape leaves so much to be desired. We have discussed moving out of the country for a couple years now and are ready to make a move within a year or two. I am a physician (an OB/GYN) and my husband is the logistics specialist for the local (and TikTok famous) baseball team The Savannah Bananas. I am ready to retire from medicine and my husband is ready to get back into bar ownership which he did for many years before joining the Bananas.
We have 3 hairless cats and a Chinese Crested dog who will be joining us. We are hoping to find an small/tiny home and a bar business to purchase and run. That being said, we are narrowing our locations to Ambergris Caye or Placencia.
I have been to both Belize and Guatemala on medical mission trips before and have seen much of the country. My husband has never been so we are planning a two week trip in October 2023 and back again probably in March 2024. I love Belize and I know he will too. Very excited for this move.

Hi! I owned a restaurant/bar in Virginia for 30 yrs. After COVID everything changed and I realized I don't like people enough to put up with the attitude of the "kids" anymore. Nearing 60 and looking for quiet place near the beach but yet close to town. I would prefer low maintenance. Maybe a community. Still very open to different places. Familiar with San Pedro but not sure if that's the right place.

It's been well over 15 years since I last visited Belize. My husband and i had planned to buy a home for retirement or vacation in Belize, Panama, Mexico or Costa Rico for years. He has been sick for past 15 years so we stopped looking as he was in and out of hospital. He passed this past March. and I would like to continue our dream if possible. I am in process of selling our primary home in GA and moving to our 2nd home in FL and use that as a base to look for a place. I want a place close to beach so that I can invite my children and grandchildren to reconnect (hopefuly) as I have totally negleted them while taking care of my husband.

My wife and I have been to Belize twice. We had great experiences. We know business people in BZ. We are seeking (i) lower cost of living and (ii) salt water fly fishing opportunity for me. I lived in Belgium for a short while in the 1970s and we recently lived in northern Baja, Mexico for 2 years. We are somewhat accustomed to the joys and constraints of living in a foreign country. I enjoy learning the Spanish language and want the insertion experience. We spend a lot of time on the internet. Both of us are entrepreneurial business veterans; I am a retired lawyer (IP and business) and my wife has a Masters in management. We've owned various enterprises over the last many years, from real estate to internet sales. One of the main things we seek is to be able to interact with other folks who have a bright outlook on life, and from whom we can learn how to enjoy our autumn years in a refreshing environment.

Hello There,
My husband and I are preparing a move abroad. We have selected Belize as our top choice but we are still in the process of weighing the pros and cons between Belize, Costa Rica, or Roatan.
We have 2 chdren 10 and 5 who are very excjted for a move abroad as wd have discussed it for the past few years.
Our main concerns are real estate, schools, healthcare, and culture and acceptance of Expats.
So glad we found this forum and hope we can answer all or most of our questions that I have been unable to fully discern through my own research.

Hi, my name is Missy and my husband Mark and I (while not yet at retirement age) want to at least slow things down, maybe be digital nomads. There are several reasons we have started looking into a big move like this, but the most important one is our 11 year old daughter. She is not as excited as we are at the prospect of moving, but we feel this change would benefit all of us. We've done lots of research regarding where we'd like to start this new adventure and Belize is at the top of the list!

I am a retired ophthalmologist seriously considering moving abroad due to serious uncertainties about the future of the U.S. My retirement fund is not as good as it should have been and I need to live where ongoing inflation is not a problem. I would like to continue practicing ophthalmology, but I doubt I could get a license to practice in Belize.

My wife and I with our 2 children 6 and 2. Are looking to move to Belize. Living in Orlando area at the moment. I run a gym and a side business. My wife is a nurse. Grew up moving around due to the military so I'm used to going to a new place and adapting. We choose Belize for many reasons that fit our needs for what we want in our new chapter in our lives. Looking to rent for 1 to 2 years then build a home on land we will purchase. Also starting a gym I'm the near area we will be living. If anyone has any suggestions we will definitely appreciate it. Especially regarding children. Thanks!

Don't expect Placencia to be how it was 10 years ago. People have discovered the beautiful beaches and are showing a preference to the peninsula over the islands. Best to come back and check it out to see if it still holds your heart.

We are both retired and find that life here in the US has become somewhat less than palatable. Traveled to Belize (Placencia) ten years ago and loved everything about it. We have decent but not bucks-up income from retirement so just getting more mileage out of our funds is one of the bigger reasons driving this train.
I'm aware that some of the things we take for granted here are not always available elsewhere- But we don't live a lavish lifestyle as it is- So as long as the basics are covered, I'm not terribly worried about culture shock- but that's why we joined this forum- To get a reality check from those who can speak from experience.

Hi, I am a woman in my late 40's, looking to retire to somewhere with turquoise water and Belize shares the top of my list with the ABC islands and Grenada. When I officially walk away from my current life, I do have the opportunity to do long term stays to try places out, but I'd really like to find my place sooner rather than later. My concern is finding a community with other single people in their forties as well. ...so I'm hoping I can get some advice here regarding expat communities that might skew younger than traditional retirement age.

I'm a senior US citizen looking to retire to a place that's a little slower paced and easy on the body. I'm planning a trip to Belize in August 2023 to visit various locations to make an informed decision on which area I would for myself and adult daughter to live and contribute to the community/volunteer spaces. We have a custom pillow business here in the U.S and would like to continue the business abroad to decorate spaces for locals and business abroad (Mexico, Africa and other countries that are in close proximity to Belize) I have many skills: Organizational, Accounting, Mechanical, Building, Administration, Hair braiding, Gardening and so many more that I can teach or demonstrate. To be able to give skills and training and feel as if all of my talents were not in vain to feel appreciated is mainly behind the move to relocate.

I retired in 2013 and moved to Colombia, married a local. That did not turn out so well, so I went back to the states, only to find that the SS and Medicare were to charge me double and with some other penalties, I could not afford to live in the states anymore. Belize is my new choice for the rest of my life. I think Corozal is my first choice.

Hi! My name is Tanya and my husband and I are planning on living in Belize half the year when we retire (in 4.5 years). We are considering Ambergris Caye and Placencia. We are avid boaters and want a house where we can have our boat in a slip in front of our house. We love fishing, snorkeling, traveling and have a yellow lab named Layla as well as 5 soon to be grown kids!

Preparing to move to Belize in two or less, sooner the better- semi-retire. Family of 4, with one heading to college, and one to high school by the time we move to Belize. Looking for simplicity.
Grew up in Cape Breton Nova Scotia - see a lot of similarity between the people of Belize and the Cape Bretoners I grew up with - main difference is the temperature, LOL :)

House sitting in Belize, Can anyone help?
Kia Ora, Hi Im Kelly (38yrs) a kiwi from New Zealand who is after a home/pet sitting job near San Ignacio in Belize. I'm a trained naturopath and herbalist dreaming to meet Dr Rosita Arvigo. Im traveling with my cute daughter (15mnth) and husband (41 yrs).
Due to the cost of living and flights from NZ to Belize are insane these days. I thought to manifest a house-sitting job and was wondering if anyone on here could help me.
I'm jungle experienced and not afraid of snakes and spiders. As I have traveled to the Amazon twice. I love all animals and would treat them like my own back here in NZ. As I am also a mum to a high-energy border collie. We are both nonsmokers and non-drinkers. Can stay a while my husband just requires internet access for his web designer job.
If anyone can point or know of a place to stay. that would be amazing.
from intrepid nature-loving kiwi.
Kelly

Dear Members of the Canadian Expat Forum in Belize City,
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Collins and I am a 30 years old Canadian citizen currently residing in Canada. I have been considering a move to Belize City for some time now and would like to gather as much information as possible before taking the leap.
As a Canadian expat myself, I understand the challenges and difficulties that come with relocating to a new country. That is why I am reaching out to you, a group of experienced and knowledgeable individuals who have successfully made the move to Belize City.
I would be extremely grateful if you could share any insights, tips, or advice you may have on the following topics:
1-Cost of living in Belize City 2-Availability of housing and different neighborhoods to consider 3-Job market for Canadians in Belize City 4-Healthcare and medical facilities 5-Cultural norms and customs
Any information you can provide would be of great assistance to me as I make my decision to move to Belize City. I would also be more than happy to connect with any of you personally if you would like to share your experiences and insights.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Best regards, Collins

I am looking at Belize as one of the locations to relocate to, following my retirement this year. I live in a resort town in the Canadian Rockies and enjoy my skiing and climbing, but am also an avid scuba diver and love the ocean. Winters are seemingly getting longer and colder as I age (LOL) and Belize appeals to me for a number of reasons. I look forward to gaining as much knowledge as possible in order to educate myself on the reality of moving from my very familiar lifestyle/living conditions, economy, etc.
Cheers,
M

I am relocating too, just returned from Belize and have made an offer on a house and land. Honestly San Pedro and Ambergris Cay are beautiful but every available plot is being sold there and it will soon be nothing but homes on tiny plots of land. Would be perfect for a rental but not to live, extremely congested. Secret beach is another over populated area too. I would suggest Corozal, 20 minutes from the Mexican border to the larger stores, close to the water, stores for all your needs and much more for your money. Such a beautiful place!

Hi my wife and I are close to retirement age. We are considering Belize for the weather and proximity to the U.S. and also the cost. We have children and grandchildren living in the states. We have never been there, so our plans are take long "vacation" to get a feel for the country. The other contender is the Dominican Republic. Many trips there love the place, has its draw backs like any other place.

I am considering a second home in Belize. (Check out my primary one by looking up Ola Brisa Gardens on the internet or via TripAdvisors.)
My wife passed away about four years ago and I now need to return to the companionship of others.
Am thinking about coming down next week but would like to chat - via phone or e-mail - with some expats first.
I am a writer. My last three volume series - The Civilized Jungle - can be viewed on Amazon Books. We launch the new series - The Medicinal Jungle - shortly.
I look for friendship from those who have similar interests as min: Travel, gardening, writing, history, poker, etc Thank you.

Hi, I'm BonSue & my husband is John. So sorry to hear about your storm-damage losses!
After visiting Belize many times (we have lived in FL for 50+ years,) we decided to retire there, effective 3/1/2023. We, too, are sick & tired of the toxic politics & disregard for the environment.
We just returned from our "final relocation plans" trip to Belize yesterday. We rented a home (in Sanctuary Reserve in Stann Creek, near Dangriga) There is a fully functioning marina there, as well as homes for rent/sale. Due to illegal acts of the former USA owners, the place is currently in the hands of a receiver, However, we're nearing the end of that ordeal, so it might be worth checking into!

My husband, John, and I are moving from Belleair, FL, to Stann Creek, Belize, on March 1, 2023. John is a retired civil engineer & I am a writer. We qualify for QRP status, which will allow us to ship our belongings to Belize & live there on our modest retirement savings. We plan to file QRP paperwork right away.
In addition to its low cost of living, we fell in love with the natural beauty and diversity of Belize. We love the country's commitment to preservation and its welcoming population. The fact that most people speak English is a real plus.
We just returned from a house hunting trip & have rented a home near Dangriga (In Sanctuary Reserve deveopment) We plan to bring essentials with us & ship our furniture & household goods once we have gained QRP status.
We are a quiet, laid-back couple. I plan to volunteer at local schools (if wanted) to help students learn creative writing techniques. John hasn't decided how/if volunteering to talk about engineering would be helpful, but is willing to engage if his expertise is desired.
We both enjoy SCUBA and snorkeling. John likes to fish, exercise, & watch TV, I like to garden, take pictures, do arts & crafts projects, and write (I primarily write novels - duel time period, paranormal historical fiction.) I plan to continue writing while living in Belize.

I love Belize and the warm and friendly people. I am moving from the USA and I have lived in Michigan for 20 years and now in Virginia Beach VA for almost 50 years. I am hoping to find and make new friends on this exchange and also get some answers to a few things like mail that I am having trouble figuring out.

Hello, we just got back from Belize and have a piece of property we are looking at. We were having a hard time deciding whether we wanted to be in Corozal, near the Mexican border or in Hopkins, where there is a larger expat community. I believe we have decided on Hopkins (Sittee River Villiage area). We will see if it pans out, but we love the country no matter what happens.

Hello KT100. Thank you for the reply to my introduction.
Similar to your advice of spending a month, each year, in Belize, I have read this same advice in many articles as I've begun my research. I think it is great advice and I wish it were feasible for me to follow it. However, I simply do not have the means or liberty to do so.
I am planning to visit next year but it will simply consist of a 1 week time frame. Hopefully, I will be able to make a few trips during the next few years, prior to a goal of retiring in approximately 4-5 years. I understand this isn't ideal but it is my reality.
So, my means are humble. Am I dreaming of a Belize retirement that is not actually realistic due to limited income and lack of freedom (both are big motivators for the dream)?

Chacoman: Full disclosure, I am not a current or retired medical professional, so some of my responses are opinions based on observation. I am a retired insurance exec, and have lived full-time (permanent resident) for the last 8.5 years on the Placencia peninsula. I do not know if you have been to Belize yet, but you must visit before you make any kind of decision about moving here. Preferably visiting for at least several weeks or months across seasons. As respects climate, you seem to be OK with high humidity and significant rain. If you want to be able to smell and hear the ocean you will have to live on the islands of Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, or the Plancencia peninsula. Corozal in the north and Punta Gorda in the south are both on the water, but neither of them really have good beaches. Should you wish to continue teaching or practicing medicine or psychiatry, you will need to apply for a work permit. The issuing of these permits is very limited, and they are only issued for work where there is no or limited availability of Belizean workers. I have seen no indication of a lack of medical professionals here, especially in the private sector. You may wish to look into a firm in the States that provides on-line medical/psychiatric consultations. Decent internet is available in the major population centers, so you could provide those from Belize. Even though I am not a medical professional, I do follow the work being done so-called psychedelics. I even invest in some of the companies working to change the scheduling of these substances, and producing various products utilizing them. I believe it will be a hard row to hoe opening up Belize to any of these products. The government is trying to have a referendum at this time to even allow or de-criminalize marijuana, and they are getting a lot of push back from the multitude of religious groups down here. Belize is a small country of approximately 400,000 population, so it does not take many people to squash a proposition. Most roads in populated areas are good enough for an e-bike with suitable frame and tires. If you are going to travel within Belize, there are bus lines, shuttles and taxis to accomodate this. You will find that in certain areas like San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, and the Placencia peninsula that the transportation of choide is golf carts. Rentals are plentiful. I have one I use for local travel, and a car I purchased here for travel to other parts of the country. My wife and I sold almost all of our assets in the States and moved down here with only 5 bags of clothing. We could have left 2 of those bags behind. We live off her and my Social Security, and we rent our apartment. Long-term rents are fairly high, but probably less than in the States at this point. I will repeat myself, come visit first! If you have further questions or more of my input, and wish to take the conversation off the public forum, you can contact me privately via the forum site. Barry K

Hello to all Belizeans--I must say, I like the way that rolls off the tongue, which strikes me as a good sign. Also a 66 y.o. single healthy male who weeps at the disintegration of the USA before my very eyes in very real time.
I don't like turning my back on my motherland, but the meager SS retirement would buy me a shed or here in NM a casita is not appealing, as would be the atrophy of my skill set which seems increasingly irrelevant here.
I spent a summer on Guam and know what a high humidex is, the coral reefs and sandy beaches seem of sufficient recompense. And rain--man I am overdue to park my butt near the ocean (born in SF, CA) and take some deep breaths of salt air and here the pelting of a downpour. (Here in ABQ a good year nets 10" of precip and we have gone for months without a drop).
The one thing that concerns me is whether an MD and PhD will literally make me overqualified. I haven't practiced (choosing to teach instead) in a decade, but I stay abreast of psychiatry where nothing of substance has changed for 20 years in any event.
I don't want to ramble on, but would love to hear from someone working in the health care sector for info. One item of extreme interest is that there is a revolution occurring in psychiatry involving the use of drugs like psilocybin and MDMA. It occurs to me that if I could be of some assistance in reintroducing some of the sacraments of Mayan civilization would complete a cycle of Karma.
In short, it strikes me as a dream match, but do not want to have a set of expectations at odds with reality. I don't plan on buying a car, and maybe shipping an e-bike if the roads are up to it (can they be any worse than Jamaica's once you go rural?). If things don't work out will try something else--I'm leaving nothing behind of value, and if it won't fit an a couple of suitcases, aint coming. Chacoman

Hello, I am looking forward to retiring but can't afford to do that in the US so am moving to Belize and taking my 88-yr-old mother with me! I lived in the Zambian bush for 4 years without amenities so pretty sure I can handle Belize. I am an author and plan to continue to write and also hope to get back to my art as well. I want to make the transition as easy as possible for my mom so hope to get lots of info, suggestions, and guidance on this platform.

Hello, I am a lover of travel, and have always dreamed of living abroad full time but could never get all the pieces together at the same time. I now have a career that I think/hope will allow me to do that. I am hoping to become a seasonal expat initially, and then eventually full time.

Hello, my name is Laura, and I’m form New York. I have always wanted to move out of New York, some place where its warm all year, my bones can’t take the cold lol, but didn’t really have a place in mind. When I met my now wife 4 1/2 years ago, she told me that she wanted to move to St. Thomas. We started doing out homework on moving to an island, and what became impossible was now possible. We visited St. Thomas a few times and fell in love. A couple of weeks ago I was on social media, and saw something about Belize being one of the cheapest islands to move. Coincidentally, I spoke to my Cousin this week, who had just come back from Belize with her family, and told me the same thing about Belize and that she and her Husband might be interested in moving there. She also sent me this Expat site. Yesterday I asked my wife if she would be open to moving to another island other than St. Thomas, not crossing St. Thomas out, she said yes, so here I am joining this site.

I am a 55-year-old married female, currently living and working in the MidWest of the United States. I grew up here, but I have lived in Africa, Ireland and Spain. I also do medical mission work in Africa and Haiti. I am trying to prepare for retirement which may not be for another 10 years. But I do not have a lot of ties to the United States and would like to move away. I love the sun and different foods and different cultures and look forward to learning about new opportunities!

I’ve retired and am considering spending a considerable amount of each year out of the country. I’d certainly like to spend time in an area prior to moving permanently or purchasing a residence. I’m looking forward to a warmer place where life is a little laid-back, the climate warm and there are interesting places to visit.

I have been a nurse for 12 years and a widow for 8. I have 3 kids and 2 grandkids. I am moving because I am tired of the American "grind" mentality and I want some time to actually slow down and enjoy being alive. I also worry for the safety and rights of my children in America's current political environment.

The Caribbean is great (and inland is also very nice), but I would be very wary of "investment opportunities." In Belize, it is easy to buy, but MUCH harder to sell. There is always a consortium planning an " ideal" development that never seems to come to fruition. I have been watching the 4Sale signs from one guy that have been up from before I moved here... 7 years ago.

I visited Placencia, Belize back in 2013 and was charmed. I've been looking into various locations in Belize, but have also been checking out a few other countries...such as New Zealand.

Hello, my wife Denise and I are considering a move to Belize in the near future. We are looking to spend some of the year in Belize and return to the US for work. 6 months in US 6 months in Belize . My questions regarding Ambergris caye is that there seems to be a lot of development to the west of the caye, Secret beach etc. does anyone know if the growth of this area is worth considering given our plans ? Our time frame is 3-4 years and land seems to be available presently.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from you

Upcoming retiree looking for a slower life than currently experiencing. A lifelong educator by profession, my wife and I will be retiring and looking to go abroad for an unspecified time. (grandchildren, aging parents, children). We have traveled extensively and I lived in Mexico for a time along with a year in Afghanistan. Looking for modest living arrangements ( no apartments). Doesn't take much to make us happy. We do have two dogs that will need to accompany us. Starting from scratch here. Please communicate honestly and be forthright.

I'm Jean from Toronto and my husband and I are retired. We're thinking of Belize because of the English-speaking factor as well as it being a warm country. I'm 72 and my husband is 78. Most people our age in Canada are thinking of moving to retirement homes from this age on or Seniors Buildings.
However, I think that I'm not ready for that yet. It's also my feeling that to wake up every morning to sunshine and warmth, go outside freely for walks (not worrying about snow and ice), etc. may in fact be good for health at this time of life. During Covid and up to now, it's been very hard to have restricted movement.
We need to be near to shopping, doctors, etc. Thinking of living near to other people for friendship and fun. We don't want to be on a big piece of land somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

I have always been interested in relocating to Belize. I have been considering relocation there since I was in my mid-to-early twenties & it got out on hold when I unexpectedly became the mother to twins. Lol. However, it always remained a dream of mine. I always thought when I was younger that I would spend my life traveling too far off & exotic places, but so far that just hasn’t been the case yet. So, I guess, too me, I feel like there is no time like the present to pick back up on that dream!

I have wife, a labrador retriever, and an armload of fly rods. Although I currently work remotely (in Florida), I would like to move somewhere with a slower pace, possibly continue to work from there, and remain close to saltwater. As a former army brat, one of the lessons my father taught me was that, no matter where you go, get out of the "american ghetto" , that if you want to only be surrounded by people just like yourself, stay home. With that in mind, Im looking for someplace that i can immerse myself in the local community, and embrace a new vision of home.

My wife and I are planning to retire in two years and are exploring the option of Expat living. We are just beginning the journey and excited about the prospects. The current plan is to rent our home in SW Florida and live off of our Social Security and rental income. We like the idea of moving to Belize because of its proximity to the US, climate, cost of living, and natural beauty. We are certainly open to other locations in Mexico and Central America.

Hello All! My wife and I are eyeing retirement and think that Belize would be a great place to move to. We've been in country once, to Cayo/San Ig but also thinking about Cay Caulker. I'm retired military and my wife is also retired. We currently live in a 41 ft. toy hauler on the coast of Oregon and have 3 cats. I'm employed in healthcare and my wife struggles with growing plants at the seaside. She was a certified diver and is thinking about becoming recertified. I enjoy watching anime, movies, and fishing. Her hobbies include spinning, reading, and spoiling said cats. We look forward to meeting everyone!

Hello,
May name is Wendy Miller and I have lived and worked in Belize since 2012. I'm not American however I am an expat from Canada. One of my concerns when I first moved there in 2012, by myself, was safety, of course. Having lived in Belize on my own, I was safety conscious, for sure, but I wasn't afraid to go places and do things.
Affordability is a very subjective term. What's affordable to you may not be affordable to me and vice versa. And you may decide to spend on something I wouldn't so again affordability is very subjective.
If you could put a few more specifics around what you would consider as an option I may be able to give you a better answer.
There are many of us who have come from Canada and the US who have found our ideal spots in Belize. Now it's not a place for everyone but it has become a place for a lot of people. Last estimates I read, a few years ago, are that approximately 14% of the population of Belize is made up of expats. That's a lot of us who made that choice.
I would love to help you with your discovery so feel free to reach out with additional questions.

My wife and I are on a similar time line for retirement. We are traveling to Belize in September to make a final decision about if and where we want to live there. We hope to move in the next 5 years.

65 and ready for Placencia or Corozal Belize, my next chapter. Looking for a furnished rental for 4 to 5 months for the next 3 years or so. Also looking to work online from home, so fast speed Internet connection is a must, most of the time.
Where are the best places for me to live?
Help me identify the "Process for 30 day extension".
What is my budget living in Belize?

I am looking at retiring on Ambergris Caye with my wife. We have purchased a lot close to Secret Beach and will be going over for a week in July to meet with builders/contractors to start working on plans for our build. I am considering going through the QRP process. We are on a 4 year plan to be there pretty much year round.

I am excited to share that after recently being empty nested I have found the courage to live my dreams in another country, without guilt. I have many years of experience in property damage assessment as a licensed adjuster and plan to use this skill set in the country where I reside. I want to give back in so many ways as I consider it a blessing to be given the opportunity to nestle in with the locals.

Hello,
My name is Wendy Miller and I have lived and worked in Belize since 2012 and my husband joined me in 2014, after a short hiatus back in Canada between 2013 and 2014 for me.
My husband and I made the decision a long time ago before there were any message boards, before social media was as big as it is now and we don't regret it.
If you would like to have a chat about our experiences and to have your questions answered please don't hesitate to let me know. We can get some time scheduled for a conversation.
It all starts with a conversation, let's chat!

Hello,
My name is Wendy Miller and I have lived and worked in Belize since 2012. My husband joined me in 2014.
Just as in the States there are good cities and there are bad cities, and just like in the States there are good parts to the city and bad parts to the city. And you can be in the best area of the city and still have something go wrong.
So you will find Belize.
There are an awful lot more people who visit Belize and have very positive experiences than those who visit who don't have positive experiences. Unfortunately, due to human nature, it's the bad experiences that get all the light shone on them. Good experiences don't make news headlines.
A few years ago the expat population in Belize equaled approximately 14% of the total population. That is an awful lot of us who don't feel threatened, who don't have bad experiences.
As for your mother, nice to hear she is active, that's probably why she is still so "young". You might want to check into her medication status and be sure that if she is taking anything that you can either get them in Belize or have them shipped in regularly from outside Belize.
Come visit, bring your mother, toot around the country and enjoy yourselves. Then see if you feel comfortable. Pick your area, make your decision.

The wife and I are veteran travelers. We are getting serious about Belize for the long term. We will start looking for a place. Rental? $2,000 to $2,500. We have a medium sized dog.
Me? Astronomer, archeologist, travel photographer (37 countries), lecturer and writer. My wife is a multi-media artist.
When not involved in the above, I am an avid fisherman. I am 71. My wife is 53.
Placentia looks GREAT.

Retired USN Officer, looking at best places in Belize to retire. Looking at bringing elderly but active Mother in Law; yes, she actually is a great Mom. My spouse of 40 years (married when she was 19, I was 26. Don’t really want to enter combat zone where have to enforce laws myself. Had heard mixed reviews about Belize. Some say great low crime area, others state it’s gotten terribly unsafe. What is the real deal?

Hello,
My name is Wendy Miller and I live and work in Hopkins Belize. Belize has just started the digital nomad program, not a lot of details are available yet though.
Basically, many people come to live in Belize who are digital nomads. If your employer is non-Belizean and your funds are transferred into a non-Belizean bank account you will be able to live and work in Belize. You will need to identify your source of income and pay $200 BZD per month for your visitor visa however most people find that this is worth the price of being able to live in paradise.
I hope this helps.

Hello, I moving from Arizona USA to San Pedro Belize in July 2022. I am renting a house there for six months to allow time to scout around, and to see if this is a place I can call my home for years to come. Looking forward to meeting and making friends with other expats on the island. I’m thinking about applying for the QRP visa.

Hello,
My name is Wendy Miller and I live and work in Belize as a real estate agent.
My first piece of advice to you would be for you to make yourself a matrix with each of your choices on the left side and the title of Pro and Con across the top and make yourself the pros and cons matrix.
You and only you can decide what are your pros and cons. Assign a rating to each element. So if ease of movement is very important to you give it a high ranking and if it's less important then give it a lower ranking.
Once you have completed your matrix then total up the elements. You have now identified what is most important to you and what is least important to you.
And of course, in your matrix, don't forget to include emotional elements as well. Emotional elements can help overcome bureaucratic crap which leads to a happier quality of life so don't discount the importance of an emotional item.
If you wish to have a conversation about different components to life in Belize please feel free to reach out to me. My WhatsApp number is 011-501-604-3225 and my email address is [email protected].
Best of luck on your decision making. It really can be a fun or enjoyable journey.

My husband and I recently went to Placencia Belize and fell in love with the area. We are contemplating purchasing a home there, which will be a 2nd home for now as well as a part time rental property when we are not there. We are still 5 years or so from retirement when we may make it our permanent or semi-permanent home.

Hi Wendy!
My name is Jewel.
I actually tried calling you this afternoon but got a recording about the service being unavailable.
I have been living in Stann Creek for the better part of a year. Unfortunately, I need to return to Canada.
I have a Plett’s hardwood house that I bought in the beginning of 2020. It is currently in a rental lot.
I need to sell it fairly quickly and was wondering if you ever had clients enquire about purchasing a home they could locate on a property of their choice.
Any suggestions on where and how to advertise the sale of my house would be greatly appreciated.
You can find me, Jewel Smith on Facebook - my profile picture is a polar bear.
Or you can email me at [email protected]
Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.
Jewel.

Hi, I'm Mandy. I am considering moving from the U.S. at least temporarily to see what it is like to live in another country. I have visited many but never been to South America, not even Mexico. I am 58 so I'm interested in an older lifestyle, meaning I'm not looking for parties and clubs but would like a taste of city life. My main priority is affordability and ease of visa if required. I only plan to stay 6 months at a time with annual visits to my family in the U.S. I am not rich. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you, Mandy

I’m in my mid 70’s and still reasonably active and healthy. I love the outdoors, gardening, hiking and swimming. I hate winter. I spend 4-5 months a year in Florida camping throughout the state parks. I am finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy the experience as much as previous years due to traffic and commercialization. Belize sounds appealing to me because of its climate and values.

I have been in the education field for over 27 years and currently teach technology at the middle and high school levels. We would be relocating with our two children, both are fluent in Spanish. We are looking to provide our middle school kids an opportunity to live abroad, use their Spanish skills, and see there is more to the world than the American experience. This is the very first step we are taking to investigate options available to us. Thanks I’m advance for your help and advise.

Hi, been retired since 2014 and live in sunny Fl. Thought this was going to be my final destination….however, where I live has become so overcrowded, overpriced and too political. I love nature, being near the water, parks and photography. So I am considering a move for me and my cat! I know I need to plan a trip to Belize and I will…I first have a rescheduled (thanks to Covid) trip to Cayman. Currently reading a book by Kathleen Peddicord…How To Retire Overseas. It’s been very helpful so far, and one recommendation was join expat groups! I look forward to reading all the comments.

Susie & I retired in 2019, sold our home & everything that would not fit in an 8' x 10' storage unit, and took off. First destination - SE Asia!
Current plans are to travel until tired of it, and likely end up in a nice tropical beach shack overlooking the sea. Belize? Roatan? Koh Pha Ngan? TBD.....!!!
Meanwhile, seeing the world, meeting great people, and loving it!

Hello!!
I live in Cleveland, Ohio and ready to leave the snow and the rat race. I have been racking my brain about where to go. Florida is NOT an option. I travel for work and have been many places. I am a scuba diver and want to be somewhere by the ocean, dive when ever I want and be by the turquoise water. When I read about the Barrier reef of Belize I was hooked, I have not been there as of yet.

Hello,
I am happy to discuss my experience. I have been in Belize over a year. The area and your interests plays a critical role in the experience. Also tourist and local living experiences are very different. Individuals reviews also vary. For example, paved roads may be critical for some and another may not mind dirt roads with potholes. They have both. more of the later. The heat is unlike anything I experienced in the US and I am from Houston (3 digit weather that I loved). Here, the humidity makes it feel much hotter than any humid whether in the states. AC is a luxury and man Americans get AC units here. They are not the same kind as in the states. They use 'split' units. For some odd reason, the insects bite us much more severe and often than the locals. Pros: the people are unbelievably kind, sociable and helpful. Cost of living is unbelievably low. Gas is unbelievably high ($6.00us/gal = $14bz) and many products are not available so you have to add import and delivery cost to some products. Opinions are very unique to the individual decision. Clothing & electronics quality is low so these are best brought in from USA. I visit the states with near empty suitcases and bring items back to Belize. During my research, the best description I heard was that you learn to live on what you need, not what you want. (no malls, no movies, no bowling, no bookstore, no top golf, usually 1 or 2 coffee shops in the fairly large towns). The 'market' is similar to 'farmers and flea markets' in the USA. The grocers decent. However, these things may not be important to you. I had to adjust my expectations and standards. (Belizians have their own time standards. "I will be there soon" may mean hours or another day. Very laid back and slow environment. I recommend you come live in various areas for at least a month each then decide if you want to live in this country and where. This will make the transition a lot easier.

I flew and my items were driving through Mexico. Looking at it in hindsight, it would have been best to sell my items and buy furniture once I settled in. Then ship important items in barrels. I wish I had known that it is more difficult, to return items back to the states. I would have left my stuff there and did a test run here in Belize. Local are very resourceful when it comes to shipping. I find my most inexpensive recommendations come from locals.

Hi, I love the lifestyle and culture of Latin America ( Mexico, Belize, etc.) and have always entertained the idea of one day, well, being considered becoming an 'expat' as I venture into the late stages of my life. I'm 53, single with two children and have at least 6 years until I can sell my company ( the youngest will then be out of High School). My goal is to find the right culture for me, Location being tropical, as I currently reside 2 blocks from the ocean in St. Augustine , Fl. and must have the ocean in my life.
However doing the math, retirement costs associated with spending those remaining years seems very unaffordable in the U. S. and frankly, I cant handle this current daily stress load past the point the kids are out on their own. Life is too short and I am a water person by nature. I've taught scuba, have owned and operated a custom pool construction company for 18 years, so yes water truly runs through me. I have a missive work etic and never see not working to a degree, but not at this pace. If I set a realistic goal that will drive me the next 6 years to make it happen.
I would like to sell my home ( hopefully my ex will also sell hers as half is mine, lol) and the business at the same time and move on to the next phase of life, however not at this extreme pace. So at the present time, well I am looking to find the right location for my next chapter. As well as determine all of the financial and logistics involved in making that happen as smooth as possible with such a big endeavor. I'll want to be able to stay in touch with US Family and Friend's and as well, Belize is an easy Flight up north should the necessity present itself. So many questions, but I am a sponge and love to learn. Cheers and any feedback is welcome.

Hello from Iowa. My wife and I are finishing up our home in Belize. Will split time between both. Give us a yell if you have questions.
Don't think of this as an investment. The Real Estate market is really slow down here. Make it about an extension of your life style. But also get something more than just a piece of land. It is still easy to find a place with water access, views, location, etc.

Welcome to Belize. My wife and I are going down this week to work on our house and farm. Almost done with the house. About 8 miles from Georgeville. Stop by and you can ask away. If you need a really good local construction crew I can have them contact you. They have built our house and also live on our property as caretakers. Anything down here, don't talk, show.

Recommend you try Placencia if you come to Belize. Placencia is great, but the reason for there, it is on a Peninsula, so you get your Beach scene, but you can hop in the car and check out the rest of the country. If you do San Pedro, it will be harder to see the rest of the country since you will need to maintain transportation somehow or rent a vehicle.
Plus Placencia is in a fairly central location. Go to the Spice garden and ask to try a fresh Cacao bean.

Google Alaskareprieve airbnb in Placencia. Realize that is not Canada, but probably similar weather and change in community style. We stayed there and the people were nice. Gave a lot of information as we were wanting to check out building and buying in Belize; and the Placencia area.
Lot of fun learning new plants and foods. Had our first pineapple we planted.

Hello! I am a 29 year old African American woman living in Georgia currently. I was raised in Philly, so the southern lifestyle does not come naturally to me. I've been in Georgia for 3 years now, but before that I lived abroad in Madrid, Spain for 4 years. That was a life changing experience. Trying to readjust to society here in the USA, especially the south, has been incredibly frustrating and stressful. I now know there's way more to life than this work-obsessed culture leads you to believe and I need to get out. (To be clear, I do love many many things about this country, but in order to live the life I want for myself, settling abroad is what is best for me.) My partner and I are looking to relocate to Central America, and Belize has been one of the countries at the top of our list. I'm just here looking for some insight from fellow expats on what creating a life in Belize could look like.
I am also open to sharing about my experience in Madrid, for any expats considering trying out that experience!

My hubby and I are Canadians in our 40s, who plan to retire early (in about 18 months) and we are currently debating where to live first. We love beaches and palm trees and sunshine. We are done with snow!. Our plans are to live in many different places in the world. Staying in each place for 6 months to a year (or longer if we really like a place).

Finding a place where language won't be a barrier and where my savings will allow me to live without stress. Not interested in buying immediately but would like to rent a 2 bedrm and 2 bath not far from a beach. Would love a condo with a balcony and a view.

Hi, we are Robert & Diane from Missouri! We currently live in a small rural town in Missouri on 30 acres with 12 miles of water surrounding us (a strip pit) It is beautiful and the woods around us are great, but we feel we are missing something in our lives! We said when we retired that we wanted to travel, well we are three years into our retirement and that isn´t happening much, life is so routine and really not filled with any adventure or fun. Our families are all so scattered about, it? not like we see each other very often, so if they wanted to visit why not come see us in a beautiful vacation area where everyone can enjoy. We are looking for a much simpler life for ourselves with a much lower cost of living where traveling can actually be an option. We like the idea of surrounding ourselves with people who actually are happy in their lives and just want to live peaceful, loving, and fulfilled lives! We are excited to learn more and hear about other? experience and views on moving over seas.

My partner and I plan to move here to Belize FT within the next 2-3 years. We’ve secured the land and are now looking to build a small cabin/cottage on it that would eventually become a guest house when we are able to build a bigger/permanent home for ourselves. We will be farming on the 16 acres. We are in our mid 50’s and have a business back home in British Columbia. We are environmentally conscious and want to build in a way that leaves the smallest footprint possible. Water catchment & solar power will play a large part on the construction of our home(s) as our property is completely off-grid in the Georgeville area.

Hello all! My name is Gabrielle, I'm from Philadelphia and dream of winters in warmer locales. I'm finishing my graduate degree and will soon become a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. COVID pushed teleheath into the mainstream and I'm interested in looking for places abroad where I could potentially be a "digital nomad". My wife and I have been visiting Ambergris Caye since our honeymoon 16 years ago and love the Island. We are ready to move there full time but want to do a 6month test run to be sure living there will compare to vacationing there. We both are now able to work from home so it is time to make our home there. I have been in Retail and Fuel supply for over 35 years and my wife has been in Property/Community management for 15 years now. We need to find a 6 month rental with possible option to buy. We need a 2 bedroom/2 bath with a budget of $2000 to $2200 a month. We also have a 5 pound Shih-Tzu. Our target date to move is October 1st this year. We will be there the first week of July for our Anniversary as well.

Hi, We are 5 people, my husband and myself and my son and his family. We have been living in Costa Rica for 10 years. We love it but the language is prohibitive. So we are thinking that someplace that speaks English might be better. We own a beautiful property here with 2 houses, a forest and creek and wonderful view of the valley. Our friends tell us it is the best property in the area! We have been in the mountains all this time so maybe a little beach time is on the horizon.

You don't have your money in Bank IDs yet like in Europe (meaning they can't pull your money -yet) so you can stick it in the US and be free. Looking into Belize myself: best if you have a lot of money for managing repair and maintenance chains for things like A/Cs, etc. - A/C being important. Seems like a weak point. Also, corruption and anti-white activity in areas. Beach side looks better than cities for several reasons: crime, health, comfort and communities of expats build up there. You may need more $ than you think.

I am 48 years old and looking to move to Belize permanently from the US. Hoping to continue working remotely. Looking to start out with renting a house for at least a year, with my wife and 2 dogs. Planning to sell most everything and move with just some essentials ( items we can fit in our enclosed 16' cargo trailer).

Greetings! We are Michael and Angela Urban. We are currently executing our exit plan for Belize December 2023. We are expecting a baby this September and will allow him/her time to grow and be off formula and have a good amount of vaccinations before we travel. He and I will be making several trips over beginning this May! He is recently retired from the Army so we are looking for our next chapter in life! We can’t wait to explore the island and see what it has to offer! Looking forward to meeting some of you as well! We have traveled to 46 countries as he lived abroad in Europe for 7 years. Travel is our passion and we look forward to a more relaxing way of life than the hustle and bustle of the USA. We are from south Texas so it’s a hop skip and a jump home where we will always have roots!

I am Sarah who has recently relocated to San Pedro Belize from Canada. I am investigating the idea of settling here. I am a retired osteopathic manual practitioner but I do miss the practice and may be interested in working part-time in the field here. I am told this may be next to impossible by an expat who has had a very difficult time obtaining the correct licenses and permits for her business. As such, I would love to talk to others who have chosen this area for settlement; I believe I should receive more than one opinion before making any big decisions.
Bless!

Hello,
I currently live in NYC and patiently waiting a few more years til my retirement age to move someplace warm, like Belize, to semi-retire. I'd like to either buy land there and build a house, buy a fixer-upper, or a turn key home if the price is right.
I cant wait!!

Up until 2014, I was a full time registered nurse. Health issues forced me to retire early. I have raised four boys, and am currently single. A friend and I recently visited San Pedro and fell in love! We are currently researching San Pedro, caye caulker and placencia as potential areas to relocate to. Our plan is to move within the next two years. I have spent my entire adult life taking care of my family and my patients, and I now feel like it’s time to take care of me!

My Name Is William F. I am 59 years old and have lived in Canada my whole life. I must say that I am tired of the snow and freezing cold weather in the winter. I work for a company where I am a permanent work from home employee so where ever I live I just need a high speed internet access. I would like to relocate later next year and would like to keep working for the company that I currently work for so I would not be drawing any income in from Belize but from our parent company in the United States. I would like to live in Corozal (I think). I am still researching.

Hey my name is Larry
I am currently living in Florida, I am planning on retiring but I don't like the way the politicians are going up here in the States. I am planning to retire in 2025 and collect my retirement from Florida and Nevada. I was looking in the area of Belmopan or nearby there since the rents are a little cheaper. I do have a couple pets so I will be bringing them with me when I rent a place so I will probably be driving down from Florida thru Texas and Mexico. I am going to take a few day and come down to check it out. I am more of a homebody and maybe go to the store when needed. Any help that I can get from anyone would be great any advice or anything.

Yes you can just keep it.low and you will be in good shape. There are no restrictions yet for working online from home in Belize for expats. It is a bit challenging to get a job in Belize if you are a foreigner; usually a company that hires foreigners do all the paperwork for you to get the job.

Hi I'm Megan; I moved my little family from NJ to Placencia Belize nearly 5 years ago where we operate a little guesthouse. I've been keeping a blog: RealLifeRecess.com about our expat experience, community happenings, family friendly activities, cost of living, and adventures around Belize. I wanted to join this forum for more information on other parts of Belize and to see what burning questions aspiring expats were asking (to give me ideas of what sort of articles would be useful and popular for my own site!)

@hogsfan congrats on starting to look for your dream location.
Belize is great from a taxation standpoint and English speaking. Also you can live relatively cheaply if you set it up that way.
A few research items to check out:
a. Medical- Belize can't support any major medical issues.
b. Cost to move down. Unless you do the QRP program, expect to pay around 50 to 70% tariff on everything you bring down. Car costs $10,000 blue book, you will pay $7,000 tariff, example.
c. Renewing passport costs $xxx per month per person.
d. Gas is really really expensive. Choose the lifestyle that you can afford.
e. Site selection. Recommend you come down at least 6 times before you buy or rent. Each time try a different locale unless you know where you want. Then rent an AirBNB like the home you want.
f. If you buy a house, you will need a "Live nearby" caretaker to watch the house when you are away. Budget both their living accommodations and their pay. Unless you do a gated condo community.
It's all doable. Just need to research.

Hello,
We are a family of 4 thinking of relocating to Belize for a few yrs later this year. I am a licensed naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist. My husband is a naturopathic doctor and registered massage therapist. We have 2 boys aged 9 and 12 yrs. I'm Canadian and my husband is American. We currently live in Canada and would love to take a break from the hectic and crazy North American lifestyle. We want to be able to work but also spend more time with each other and our boys. We visited Belize in 2018 and 2020 and we absolutely loved the country. We were in San Ignacio for 1 week and San Pedro for 4 days. I am looking for info on schools for our boys and the best areas to live that has other families so our kids can make friends. If there are any families on the forum with young children please let me know your experience raising your kids in Belize. Thanks

My family and I are seriously considering leaving the US. I am not sure about the move time or specific location… a lot of things are still on the table. I’m still in the research stage of leaving the USA and am in search of all the info I can get my hands on. Belize has always been in my heart since visiting for 2 weeks years ago. I instantly fell in love with the people. Thanks! ??

Hi I'm returning to Belize, I'm not close to retirement age, but I've decided to start the move. I must admit I'm scared as hell. I'm trying to figure out what to do, once I'm down there. I am Belizean, I grew in California but I do face a lot of issues. I like being back.

Hi Everyone, just a bit about myself, I'm Belizean born but immigrated to the US around the age of 9. I have decided to move back to Belize, and began the process of building my cottage. I'm planning on living in PG were I was born. Although I was born in Belize, I still get charge foreign price :}. I recently did an interview on PGTV about my challenges, and on issues I've incurred, I'm not immune from all the issues expats face.
Thanks Everyone.

We recently vacationed in Belize and really enjoyed the experience from the weather to the vibe. We are considering purchasing a place and moving there upon retiring. This is a few years down the road but sounds exciting. We currently reside in Arizona.

I am almost 72 and am tired of the attacks on voting via legislatures in the USA. I am tired of working on political change while the right grows bolder. I am also very tired of guns. If votes get over-turned I will leave the US. I recently went to Belize and Spain, and I liked both. Spain is likely too expensive. Moving anywhere requires building community, using skills and being busy with buddies. I am single so none will accompany me. I skilled at teaching, public speaking/storytelling and electrical engineering. I like to paint and write poetry. I am an environmentalist and am interested in how Belize is working on that. My main work was in lowering energy consumption for big organizations and that helps the environment. I can see myself helping the young with tutoring or speaking about STEM, public speaking and storytelling careers. My one concern is healthcare, I depend on Medicare in the US though not unwell I am old, so anything could go wrong.

Hi to all; I am Terry. I am serious about re-locating to the San Ignacio area in Belize in February 2022. I am a recently retired Psychotherapist who has lived and worked in a number of countries in the world. I have visited Belize twice and feel it is the place for me at this stage in my life. I am an avid fan of Disc golf and have seen there are a few courses in this area that I am anxious to play and support. I haven't seen may rentals available in this area so far and am wondering if there are other websites or relators that I should be contacting, thank you in advance and I appreciate being able to join this forum. Terry

We moved in August to the Belmopan area. We have two cats and one dog. The cats we were able to take with us on the delta flight, but it cost us $200 per cat. Only one animal per person is allowed. We also had to pay a certified veterinarian in the states to bring them up to date on the required vaccinations and get a health certificate to travel. If you go on the baha.org.bz website you can see what exactly is needed. Also check your air carrier to see what they require. As far as the dog is concerned it depends on their size. If he can fit under the seat on the airline he can go with you. Unfortunately we have a big dog and when we flew no airlines would accept him. We had to get him to a kennel near the airport in Miami and give them the paperwork to get him on a cargo flight with Amerijet. They fly once a week to the Belize airport. In total it cost us close to $4000. Not sure if the airlines have changed to allow cargo pets so you might want to check that first. Good luck

Hello,
We are driving to Belize later this year. Question for you. Can we drive our truck through without issues? We are looking to get a temporary permit. Do we ABSOLUTELY need to own the vehicle? We already have permission from the lender to drive it into Belize. I have read both posts saying you need to have the title and in our name, and others say you dont need it for a temp permit

They take mask wearing seriously and no one protests it. Check out the stats because their covid rate has been extremely low. Social distancing is also taken seriously. Restaurants and many stores require hand washing prior to entry.

How do you plan to retire?
Example. We love growing fruit trees and different landscaping. Planted many fruit trees. This last trip, there was a real rocky and sunny spot that did not look useful at all. Got the idea to do a Cactus garden. Thus spent that trip looking for cactus specimens.
With that idea, our next trip we will do an orchid path. We are keeping part of our ground in natural jungle. It has many features within a 1 acre patch. Big trees, old structures, rocks, River overlook, etc. Will build a path through them and attach orchids to various spots along the shaded trail.
Attached below are some wild yam starts we rooted. Will plant them along the trail.
Key is figure out how you will "retire".

No real way to give you affirmation. Its a personal decision and situation. Recommend you don't make a decision. If it happens, it happens. Do the following.
Since your retired, recommend you visit and stay one week in each of the following areas: I would give it a breather in between locations, unless your up for two weeks in a row.
Corozal, San Pedro, Placencia, San Ignacio/Santa Elena.
a. Recommend you do the following at each location. Rent a house or condo, similar to what you would like to buy. Don't stay at a hotel.
b. At each town, get in touch with a Realtor and ask them to show you three prospective properties you describe.
c. Before you go there contact three people in each of the areas and ask to spend half a day with them and get their story and likes/dislikes.
d. Decide how and if you can "Retire". Mentally, socially, activities, etc.
e. Go to a Rotary club meeting where you can.
f. Make a list of everything you "need" and keep track by location. Internet, entertainment, medical, activities, shopping, vehicles, banking, security, just sitting still. I will be on my 11th trip and still haven't gotten my bank account opened. Don't be US centric.
g. If you decide to move to Belize decide between taking 2 years to build your dream place. Or buy from an Expat who is leaving. Virtually all Expats will leave. Cash is king, So get something of value, that you can adjust, versus waiting two years to live in something. Time is precious.
h. Are you a "Victim"? If you are a victim then don't come to Belize. You will be a victim. Take what happens as an experience. And remember Cash is King, both good and bad.
i. If you own property, you must have a caretaker. The only way out of that, is to buy a condo in a secured community. A caretaker is your number 1 priority. Even if you live there full time.
We bought 50 acres and are rebuilding an existing concrete structure. Planting a Teak plantation and a lot of fruit trees. Plan to visit Belize 8 to 12 weeks out of the year. We have had good and bad experiences, but it is just part of the flavor and experience.
Your daughter in Houston, is great. Its only a quick 2 hour trip for both of you.

The biggest mistake expats make is selling their house. Many before they have even been abroad. Suicide, if you want to loose everything , then sell up and move to a strange country. How many times have you visited Belize , in all the different seasons in different areas, NO, then do so before you make a fool of yourself and loose everything. Be sensible. do your homework, do your recce. Good luck.

Hello, my name is the Texas Cowboy, I live in Texas, and I would like to know if I would like living abroad.
I'm an old cowboy/Trail rider who loves the out doors, and a little cooking, fishing, and cooking, and fishing. I currently have about (12) months until I cant actually make a decision on which way I want to make my final resting place to be but I sure think Belize just may be a right place to start, I'm just a little nervous about up-rooting.
I just can't see myself attempting to retire here in the USA it will be unreasonable I want to enjoy my last with what I have left.
Please any words of advice for me would be greatly appreciated, consider me a "Novices"

@DonnieBrasco,
I am not there yet. I am trying to get at least a handful of prospective pieces of real estate to look at before I hop on a plane. I know being on the soil will probably yield better results but it just makes me feel like I at a bit of a head start.
I will go sometime before the end of the year. Seems BZE is a popular choice for many so I feel like I need to move sooner rather than later.

My husband and I are looking at visiting Belize next Spring. Coming from the frozen tundra of NW Wisconsin, we are looking for a place to spend some time during the Winter months, and possibly relocating at some time in the future. My husband has a computer repair business and I have an online store.
I'm doing due diligence before hand by reading as much as I can about the country, what is available and what is not, and generally how people handle living in a foreign country.
I've got my share of questions to ask, and I hope that you will be patient with me as I get to know more about Belize.

Good morning everyone!
My name is Carole-Ann. I am planning to move to Belize with my husband John as soon as the kids are off to College, in a few years. We are obsessed with Belize, and believe it would be a perfect place for us to work remotely / retire on a pretty beach. It is such a wonderful dream!
We are eagerly awaiting our vaccine to start traveling again. If it happens this year (hope hope hope), you'd like to check out the place this year. We are thinking about the coast South of Belize City, towards Dangriga.
We welcome your advice in all matters. We have been reading tons of books, but real experience and conversion would be so much more valuable.
We are looking forward to meet you all in person one day!

We had good friends living on AC they were all different nationalities and ran corp. businesses on line to control their worldwide businesses, and since then , 5 yrs back, the internet has improved and cheapened, if you can run out of country companies and get paid into a US bank you can have a good life.

I'm a 73yo single guy currently living off Galveston Bay in Texas. I'm hoping to make my first visit with a good buddy of mine in April? depending on this COVID madness. I currently work part time, but will likely quit before I travel. I've spent a lot of time researching Belize- considered the move previously. Maya Beach and Placencia are my top 2 choices and I'm hoping to live on the frugal end of the scale. I will probably continue to teach radiology classes online if internet service permits, but I may consider an online store. My primary goals are to swim with the fishes; have sand in my crack and perfuse myself with Belikin. Hope to make some nice friends as well.

Hi, I,m Mark, I am in my final working years in the US. I am a construction superintendent and own a Martial arts academy where I teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am trying to decide on a location to retire and Belize seemed like a great choice as the English language is spoken and would be the easiest transaction for me. I plan my first visit this year in march or April, and I have decided to check out Placencia and the Stanns Creek area. . I also am curious to see if there was a market for an ex pat to open a Jiu Jitsu / MMA academy , and how complicated it would be to make that happen.

It was going to be our retirement home but due to life changes (grandchildren in the US) we need to sell. It's located in Yo Creek Village in the O. Hello all, I'm York and I'm currently living in Minnesota (and YES it's COLD). I'm a retired high school teacher of 30 years. For the last year I've been a camp host. What that entails is that I go from RV campground to RV campground making things work more effectively and efficiently and get to stay there for free. Loved it... But now I want a new experience and that experience is Belize. I have a grown daughter who shares this dream and we want to buy a homes around the Corozal area, nothing to expensive but with 2+ bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. So, this is my quest and I am doing all I can right now to make it happen. Wish you all to stay safe and live your dreams.

Well hi! I’m Joe, and I’d like to do a deep dive early ‘21 to check out Belize. Other than grabbing a map and renting a motorbike, I’ll be winging it. Just thought I’d send this message in a bottle in case someone had tips or would like to tag along. (Depending on the country opening up as expected.) Thinking 6 mos - 1yr ought to clue me in a bit. Slightly concerned about the cost of mission creep since I love diving and boating, when I should be checking out the country and community. Chat me, please, and thanks.

Hi all, my name is Joanne. My husband John and I just moved to the Cayo in October. We're living at Carmelita Gardens, just outside of Santa Familia (about 10 km from both San Ignacio and Spanish Lookout). So we've been through Eta and, like a lot of locals, hoping to avoid Iota. Love it here, glad with our decision to move. We're originally from Ottawa, Ontario Canada.

Hi: I've been doing my homework for quite some time and plan to arrive in Placencia around Feb. 1, 2021, if the border is open and I can navigate all the details of the trip. lol Driving from Boston, MA so this is a major adventure. Have found an apt for a year. I believe I can have a new sim card put in my iphone to use in Belize. Am I right? I will be living off my SS so I know my funds will be tight but I have no problems "eating local" and don't have many "special" needs. Great info on this site btw. C U soon, John

Hi I'm D!
I am planning to soon buy property in Belize where I eventually plan to make a second home. I have gone every year for the last few years and look forward to having my own place. Currrently in the US and looking to leave the legal field far behind for something more connected to who I truly am. The plan is to buy land/home in Cayo. I want lots of fruit trees and a garden (I'll have to learn how to take care of them but that's another story!). Would love to hear ideas about practical things to consider when purchasing the land and real life experiences living in Cayo. Thanks!

Hi friends.... Josh and Dana from Alabama. We are in our early 40s and are dreaming and preparing to one day be, at minimum, part-time residents of Belize. We have visited a few times and are planning to continue visiting different areas of the country as we are able. We love nature and tranquility and desperately desire a more laid-back lifestyle..... hence Belize. We currently are raising children ( 3 of them) and plan on retiring and moving south when the youngest goes off to college. So, for now we dream and save and learn and visit this forum to gain experience and understanding from those who are now where where we one day hope to be. Thanks for including us in the group.

John and Thipaya, looking forward to your Thai restaurant. Always like new experiences and choices. Although we are in the process of rebuilding an old structure in the Cayo district and then living there part time from the great cold north of the US. If you need anything, just let me know and I will see if I can hook you up with the contacts I have down there.
Right now we are doing everything over the phone. I'm a real plant and food lover. So trying to get our property planted with everything Belize, so it will start to grow before the dry season.

Awe Belize. Looking forward to moving to Belize and living there on and off, especially over the Winter months from the US. Bought a beautiful acreage in Cayo. Rebuilding an old concrete structure that was taken, except for the concrete. Looking for to engaging with all of you, since Belize is such an easy place to get around.
El and Peter, hope you have a great move to San Pedro. Hopefully Covid releases soon, as I need to get down and check on the house and Trees. Plus just enjoy.
Although we are not down there yet. If you need anything, just give a yell.

We are El and Peter, a retired Hallmark Cards exec (and previous department store buyer), and a retired Marine officer (and logistics exec) from the coast of South Carolina. We are moving to Ambergris Caye in December 2020, and have posted several times for information from other expats--but haven't gotten much response. Why is that? We will gladly offer help to other prospective Belize residents after we have been here a while. Regardless, we are looking forward to arriving in two months, along with our little dog. Would love to play Pickleball with other expats if there are courts available!
