Bring my motorcycle from Belize to Mexico

Post New Topic

My motorcycle is registered in Belize. To bring it to Mexico, what is the process? Is it better to ride it into Mexico or have it trannsported? If I sell it once in Mexico, does it have to be registered in Mexico first?
Thank you

I cannot answer you questions in specific and it seems that there have been some changes very recently. There was a message from the Belize govt on "On the Road in Mexico" I think. Basically when you enter Mexico as a tourist and are granted a tourist visa, your vehicle is tied to that tourist visa. You leave, and your vehicle leaves with you. You pay a deposit on your vehicle and when you leave you get the deposit back.
You cannot sell your vehicle while you are in Mexico. It has to be nationalised first. A Mexican comercializador (broker) can advise you on the exact details and process. I imported a pontiac when I moved to Mexico and it was 18,000 pesos and about a 4 month wait. The car sat at the border all that time. If you come in as a tourist and sell your bike here, you could be denied entry in the future as the vehicle is tied to your tourist visa.
Having said that, each state seems to have their own rules when it comes to registering vehicles. Quintana Roo is one of the easiest and the Yucatan is one of the hardest. If you want to sell your bike to a Mexican citizen then invite them down to Belize and sell them the bike and let them figure out the rest. If you are selling the bike to an expat in Mexico, that is a whole different can of worms.
