Car rental in Belize & border crossing

I've decided on dental work in Mexico. I want to utilize the down time between appointments to locate a rental in Belize. I've seen the absurd rental costs in Belize and the much more moderate prices in Mexico. How difficult is it to cross the border from Mexico with a rental car? I cannot think of any other cost effective way to scout the country out on a Social Insecurity income.
