Moving to San Pedro, Belize

Hello everyone!

I visited the island of San Pedro twice now and have completely fallen in love with it. With that being said, I plan to relocate around October or November of 2020. I am curious to know how much it actually costs to live there or how much I should have saved to move there? (I will be moving alone) I would also like to know if anyone has any experience teaching english online there? Was the salary from teaching online enough to maintain your lifestyle there? Is the wifi fast enough to even consider this? I am trying to obtain as much information as possible to make sure I am prepared for the move. If anyone would like to share their experience, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much! :)

Hi Ray. There's no such Caye as San Pedro, theres a town of the same name on Ambergris caye and there are other San Pedro's around central America.
I think you need to go stay there awhile and check out facts , such as the cost of living the way you hope to live. Who are you going to teach on line English to ? You need to do a lot more home than just styate your going to live in such and such, by the way , we lived there from 1999 to 2015, still keep very much intouch with many long term expat friends.

I am sorry. I was referring to Ambergris Caye when I said San Pedro. Sorry for any confusion! I have been there twice in the past six months. I will want to teach online with the company VipKid or DADAABC. I have asked about the cost of living, but it seems to vary. I was hoping someone could give me more information on that topic. How much it cost for them to live a normal lifestyle there or any other information.

Hi Ray.
Renting long term will cost you $600 plus , plus elec, water , gas, comms inc. internet. bring you upto around $1000 per month, this is living minimal , i think u need to allow $2k / month we ownned our own property and still spent around $3500/month, owned our own cart , ate out , lived well, went back to USA or UK every 6 months. I havent a clue on what you can earn , but if its teaching locals , peanuts, and you'll need a work permit . ive a few wealthy friends on AC who run world wide companies that earn big bucks across the world, if its local its beer money , if your lucky, remember locals spk English,

Ray,
San Pedro is the TOWN on Ambergris Caye. Same place. Monthly expenses (not living rich but nice will run you approx. $1,500 - $2,000 per month.

You will need a work permit (yes, even to teach online). That will cost you total to go through all paperwork around $2,500 BZD ($1,250 usd), per year.

If you want transportation, you can buy a bike for a few hundred bucks. If you want a golf cart, to purchase you’re looking at $3,000 USD - $12,000 USD depending on whether you want a used fixer or brand new. Permitting cost there as well. You can rent a golf cart for $400USD per month.

Basic cost (food will vary depending on how much you eat out and if you buy American items at the grocery store or not (anything you get in the US that you can’t live without - just plan to pay DOUBLE what you do in the US. Import duties, shipping to Belize city, then shipping to ambergris and then it’s DOUBLE.

So, for a single person, eating out twice a week at areal sit down restaurant (one lunch, one dinner), you can do street food stands a little cheaper, it would be something like this (assuming a US quality housing arrangement:

Rent -$650 - $1,000
Cable/internet - $70
Water - $25
Electricity - $ 150 - $250
Food - $200-$400
Entertainment/restaurants - $200
Golf cart rental - $400
Visa stamp - $25 (+ work permit app mentioned above)

$1750 - $2,500 depending on lifestyle. $1,500 minimum
