Hi, I'm a Brit maybe looking to retire to Belize back end of 2020. Have about a grand a month to live on. Wondering if someone can connect me with cheap furnished place to rent, looking at Corazal but don't mind where really, even inland. Will be just me so 1 bedroom is fine but would like a bit of space to grow fruit/veg etc.

Hi, thanks for that. I saw that document from the gov but can't make that so figured I'd just do the monthly visa thing then get residency after a year but not sure how that would impact getting somewhere to live.

Many there living on less and just never bother to do the residency footwork. Some say risky but many getting away with it. It is same here in Mexico. I live in Northern Sonora, in the free zone, a lot less hassle here and closer to USA if that is an advantage for you. You can drive right into the country and stop at immigration if you WANT to. Immigration is not even at the border.

Is that pounds of so equates to 2500bz $ or less if that is your total income you are going to find it difficult to live in Belize. Renting a one bedroom place allow at least a quarter of that each month for rent at the bottom end of the scale in a less desirable neighbourhood. For the first 6 months allow $50 bze every 30 days for immigration extension. After that it is $100 per month. If you need a car the vehicles here are expensive for what is available and petrol is similar costs to Uk. Allowing $50 for a tank full so 2 tanks a month 100$ Tax and insurance for vehicle allow $100 a month. Without a car you would need to be on a bus route or rely on Taxis Eating local produce and not buying recognized branded foods and cooking all from scratch another $100 a week. So down to having around $1000 left for all other bills like water, electricity, and gas for cooking and other living costs. It’s doable just, but not in any of the better known areas. I believe people say Corozal area is cheaper than the west but do visit and do some personal in the real situation research. Belize is a beautiful place to retire but it is not a cheap place to live. No NHS and medical is rather basic. I am not deliberately trying to discourage you, I adore living in Belize, just a few practical facts to consider. The QRP have a fiver of $2000 us per month as the figure they consider is the amount you would need to live in Belize. It is probably quite accurate as a staring budget That is fifty per cent above your own budget

Belize is the most expensive location in the region. On your budget you would do fine in Merida or Oaxaca Mex but not Belize. Also medical care is basic, amenities are lacking and infrastructure sucks. A great place to visit mind you

Hi, thanks very much for the detailed info and taking the time to reply. I'm not looking for a grand lifestyle, I'll eat mostly local and not run a car and not too bothered where I live if I can rent cheaply and have a bit of garden/growing space. Not fussed about health care and that stuff. I lived in Ethiopia for 12 years so am used to living in poor countries with limited amenities! I am wondering about the crime issue in Belize though.

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking at Belize as the visas are easy and 'English' speaking. Just need somewhere cheap to live and rent small place. Being close to States is not a concern, I'll not be travelling around much and largely living local than expat.
