Question re: Visa renewal

When I arrived at the airport a few weeks ago the official wrote in pen on my passport "TV 45"

Apparently, this meant - contrary to his spoken statement - I was allowed to stay 45 days before having to go to DAS to renew.

What happens if I just write a "1" in front of the "45"? (Legally, a U.S. citizen is allowed to stay up to 180 days without a visa.)
