What car to rent

I'll be traveling around Colombia for 3 weeks (Bogota, Villa de Leyva, Medellin, Cartagena, Coffee region, emerald mines, small towns, ...)

What car should I rent: a standaard car, or will an SUV make a big difference?
I know the normal highways are probably very OK, but what about the small roads?
