I’m approaching the end of my fifth year on my apartment lease. Every year the rent was raised the maximum allowable. However, this year, the owner got greedy and wants to raise it 50%.
At first, I was told the lease would not be renewed. Of course, the reason was that the owner wanted to circumvent the law, kick me out and raise the rent 50%. I made what I consider a reasonable counteroffer but it was rejected. Bear in mind that my rent was always paid on time or early, I’m quiet and never complain.
Do I have a REALISTIC option? I hesitate going to a lawyer but I will if it would do any good. I have a feeling the owners think I’m basically powerless and the law be damned. And my gut feeling tells me that they’re right.
They also only gave me 40 days’ notice while the lease calls for 60 days. They offered to let me rent for an extra month. Also, I am going by the original lease from 5 years ago since no new lease was signed after that. I would go ahead and pay it to avoid all the hassles involved with moving or fighting the increase, but the amount she’s asking is beyond my budget.
