Moving to Jamaica

My wife and I are planning to move to Jamaica from the US. We are trying to locate an African American expat group in Jamaica. We are trying to decide between Ocho and Negril.

Welcome to Jamaica!

How far into the process are you?

I love Ocho and Negril, but currently live and work in Montego Bay and Falmouth.

You won't have any issues finding ex pats...nor will you have issues finding locals who have recently returned. Do you have ties to the island?

Thank you for the reply; I wasn't sure I registered properly. No, I don't have any real ties to the island. A Pittsburgh native owns a resort in Negril, but I have been having trouble making contact recently.
I have a close friend who visits her resort for annual monthly visits, but that's all.

Why are you wanting to move to Jamaica? Moving there was the biggest mistake in our lives.

And that's the question that dare not be asked of these people. Poster Rick and I have warned people through the years about the perils of moving and "finding a job" in Jamaica, and we've been accused of being bitter and negative. I backed off. Most of these are Americans who are disillusioned with life in the USA for various reasons I suppose and think the answer is to move to a 3rd world country with nice weather. Let them go. Good luck. Half that Island would take their place in a heart beat to have a chance at a better life in Canada, or the USA

Without ties to the island, working is going to be an issue. So is opening a bank account unless you already have a Scotia or Victors Mutual account.

Everything here is a 'process' and you need to have a JP on speedial or enough cash to pay for said 'process'.

How much research have you done in regards to moving?

You will be 3mths upon arrival and won't be able to work...and you can extend it another 3 mths, but will have to have proof of financial support and you still can't work. You need a work permit in order work. You could open your own business, but again, it's a process. Without ties to the island and a bank account full of cash, this process can be hard.

Again, without ties to the island, or a bank account full of cash, it's very difficult for a foreigner to move here and 'make it work'.

Can be done? Sure it can...but it's a process.
