Hello All!

I have traveled to Jamaica numerous times without any issues. The last time I was there was in 2016. I have heard that the crime has risen where I will not be doing the things I used to do years ago. I never stayed in all inclusive hotels because I wanted the more local cultural experience which have been wonderful. I am planning to come back this year but I am somewhat skeptical with all the crime stories lately. Can someone please give me a honest insight on how to be more safe in returning to the island. I know no place is perfect. Please no sarcastic comments. Thanks for any help!

You don’t say where in Jamaica you’re staying.:.. that makes a difference.

Yes, there’s crime but generally it’s targeted crime not random. I’m actually more worried about being hit by a taxi/bus driver than i am about being a crime
victim.

As long as you mind your business and use common sense, you’ll be fine. Again, where you plan on staying and where you plan on going is important.

I agree with IrieStar. Depends where you are staying and what you will be doing. Are you going to be in an inner city community, in an airbnb in the Kingston suburbs or at a beach hotel? I came back from a three week visit to Jamaica in early January, visited relatives in Kingston and stayed in Negril at a small hotel. Perfectly safe but then I didn't do anything crazy like go to the 'hood at midnight for a dance. Just take the same precautions you would anywhere and you should be OK.

Good advice, all around. I would add leave the flashy jewelry at home. You're coming here to enjoy the beautiful weather, the great food, and the beaches, you don't need jewelry. Leave it at home. And just like ruthie said, don't "go native" and try to do foolish things like going to dancehall or bars at night. Have a great trip!
