Living in Detroit - what is it like?

Hi, I'm a 40 year old male, married, no kids. I've been on international assignments for the last 8 years, covering Prague, Ljubljana, Kuwait City, Istanbul, Dubai, and Pretoria, South Africa. So if someone needs advice, shoot...
Now I'm considering a job offer in Detroit. I wonder what living there is like.
Also we are in our 40s, our lifestyle is more of a 'yuppie': restaurants, bars, live music clubs, hiking or just walking at the weekends, playing tennis, golf, working out in a gym, shopping, movies, concerts.
Accommodation-wise we would definitely look at a nice apartment in a lively (but clean and safe) neighborhood. Any suggestions whereabouts in Detroit something like that could be found. What would the monthly rental be for such an appartment?
Any other suggestions (should I consider Detroit at all?).
Thanks, looking forward to get any feedback.
Ralf.
