iPhone GPS

iPhones have a Google maps app. I think the following should work.

When on Wifi or G3 service, I search for a location. Say I'm in David and I want to go to Santiago. I search for Santiago, find it, then hit the button for "Directions to here". If Google has good enough maps of Panamanian roads, it should map the entire routeif the starting point, destination and all the roads between are found.
Once that happens the position of the phone is determined by it GPS receiver. No other maps need to be downloaded, so I think the blue dot should follow me across the country regardless of a Wifi or G3 signal being in range.

Have any iPhone users tried this?
