Eating in Panama

We leave for Panama in just one short week! I have seen lots of tips about where to stay, what to do and how to get around but not much on food. I guess, my question focuses more on what not to eat. Is there anything we should stay away from? We will be visiting all the highlights of Panama, including Boquete. Is it safe to eat from street vendors? Are veggies washed in water ok or is it more about staying with anything peelable? Beer only from bottles and cans that I open? My husband is adventerous, me not so much. We both love food and trying new things however I seem to be the one with the upset stomach or catching the bug. If I do get an upset stomach, is there something local that I can buy to help settle it or should I stay with my Tums? Looking forward to see the expat crowd in Boquete on the 29th.
