LIVING IN PARAGUAY

We (66/60) are living in Paraguay since begin 2007.
We strongly would discourage people to move to Paraguay if there is no financial background like a retirement rent or similar. Working in this country is very difficult, unless you accept to work for an income of about 150-250 Euros per month!! Also a rent of less than 1000 Euros is risky because the unstable currency. The Guarani has won about 20% against the Euro and the US Dollar. For those who had a rent of 1000 Euros two years ago, that means their rent has been lowered for 20%. At the same time prices have been climbing about 15% in two years.
In general:
you can rent a small house with European standard for round about 2-300 Euros. Living here (rural) is really cheap and enjoyable. Paraguayans are extremely friendly to foreigners. Ciudad del Este is dangerous, Asuncion very nice but also a bit more hazardous during the night. Families with children should stay in Asuncion because of the better schools. Climate where we stay (Piribebuy/Department Cordillera) is fabulous. Buying land or properties is easy and very affordable for the most of the Europeans or Americans.
Beware of European "helpers" . If you buy property you must ask for documents. Paraguayans sometimes are the owners of recently documented land but are not allowed to sell it with ten years of the creation of that document! Prices of land here in our area are in the range of 1500-10.000 Euros per hectar (1 hectar is c. 2,47 acres). Food is extremely cheap. Wine, mostly imported from Argentina or Chile is also very affordable. If someone has specific questions I will gladly try to answer them. Please pardon my English. I am French.
