Portugal trip in October

Post New Topic

Hello, I will be traveling to Portugal in October (Lisbon, Lagos, ALbufeira stays). Renting a car to be flexible. Wondering where specifically (and how) I can find US expats to talk to over lunch/dinner/drinks about life in Portugal. Planning on retiring there in a few years

Facebook forums such as Americans and FriendsPT is a good place to start in finding a lot of expats in various parts of Portugal.

I am in Lagos and would be happy to meet and talk to you about my experiences. Also join Americans Living in the Algarve Facebook page. We always have events going on and usually there is a group that gets together for happy hour on Tuesday’s in Portimao.

Thanks Merc for the tip but I don’t take part in any social media so I’ll have to find the folks some other way

A strange comment about NOT using SOCIAL MEDIA - surely FaceBook and ANY other internet contact ARE social media - comments for other people to see/read.

Hi Rokojoko, we would love to meet with you, just let us know what days in October you will be in Lagos. We live in Portimao and like you we never got a Facebook account. Z.

@ heliopolis, no it's not a strange comment about social media. It's good that some people are capable of thinking for themselves, and making a conscious choice of what they want to have in their lives, as opposed to slavishly following the crowd.

Why have a Facebook account with all your personal info on it to divulge to the world? Or otherwise have one that's private, so in that case, you might as well not bother having one.

I used to have a Facebook account but deleted it years ago, and I don't miss it one iota. All it was doing was boosting Facebook's value in the eyes of advertisers, as like any other Facebook user, I was viewed as fodder for generating advertising revenue for them.

I value my privacy too much to permit Facebook, or any other social media site, to take advantage of me while I feel I'm not getting anything worthwhile in return.

Z16,

Another no facebook person. If this offer applies to others who will be in the area in October, I would like to take you up on your offer. Still working out the details of Itinerary, but looks like we'll be in Portimao afternoon / evening of 1oth. Leaving the 12th. Perhaps coffee or a drink if potentially open. Looking forward to you response via PM.

Thanks for your consideration.
Michael

Here's the problem relevant to moving to Portugal with not using social media. There aren't very many participants on here, they are anonymous and some don't live in Portugal but don't say that, and a lot of the important issues with moving to Portugal change regularly. Social media is the only place where the data is current, specific to locations (for example, which SEF offices have appointments is something easily found on social media), and what resources are available. There's nowhere else to get this data.

And some of it you won't know you need to know until you see it there.

Also, the lack of anonymity helps as you can tell if someone is in a position to give good information.

So what you are giving up is the ability to have current information from knowledgeable people. If you're fine with that, stay off social media. For people who are thinking about moving to Portugal and really need current information and resources, it's the only place to get it.

If you’re one of the few people in the world who is capable of making a conscious decision on your own without slavishly following the crowd, then why are you asking to meet up with others in PT to get tips and information?

Buy a plane ticket, land and have at it.

I don't participate in social Media, but my wife does. This 'exception' is my first (and likely last) post.
Pretty much the best of both worlds.
I'm personally uncomfortable with the medium, yet see value for those that choose to participate.
We connected with Americans Living In The Algarve and have made many friends.
We made the move a year ago and love the life here
