Expatriate life in Bangkok?

I need some info from any expatriates living in Bangkok.

I was told that life in Bangkok is very difficult for a female expatriate and that she should always be accompanied by someone where ever she goes. Is that true also that foreign women are vulnerable in Bangkok as they are target for crime? Is there any truth to these statements or was it overly exaggerated?

From one hand, I heard great things about getting a place called "Lakeside Villa I and II". On the other hand, I was told however that the security guards and walls encompassing the compound could overwhelm a person and make him feel confined as prisoner???

Can anyone confirm if the above statements are true? Greatly appreciate if someone from Lakeside Villa I or II can provide any input. Many thanks
