Summary: The approximate population of Tajikistan is 9.2 million people. The largest cities in Tajikistan are Dushanbe (the capital), Khujand, Kulob, and Qurghonteppa. Expats love living in Tajikistan for its stunning mountain scenery, friendly people, and low cost of living. People describe life in Tajikistan as peaceful and laid-back, with a strong sense of community. Foods popular in Tajikistan include plov (rice pilaf), mantu (dumplings), and shurpa (soup). The cons of living in Tajikistan include the lack of infrastructure, limited access to healthcare, and the risk of natural disasters. The average cost of living for an expat is around $1,000-$1,500 per month. This includes rent, utilities, food, and other basic expenses.

What do I need to know about living in Tajikistan?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Tajikistan, they said:

"Tajikistan is a beautiful country with a rich culture and history, but expats should be aware of the potential challenges of living there. Expats should research the local laws and regulations, as well as the cost of living, before making the decision to retire in Tajikistan. It is also important to be aware of the language barrier, as Tajik is the official language and English is not widely spoken. Expats should also be aware of the potential for political instability, as the country has experienced civil unrest in the past. Finally, expats should research the healthcare system in Tajikistan and make sure they have adequate health insurance coverage," remarked one expat who made the move to Tajikistan.
