Last updated on Jan 02, 2024

Summary: The approximate population of Macedonia is 2.1 million people. The largest cities in Macedonia are Skopje (the capital), Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, and Tetovo. Expats love living in Macedonia for its stunning natural beauty, friendly locals, and affordable cost of living. People describe life in Macedonia as relaxed and laid-back, with a strong sense of community. Foods popular in Macedonia include burek (a savory pastry filled with cheese, meat, or vegetables), ajvar (a roasted red pepper spread), and tarator (a cold yogurt-based soup). The cons of living in Macedonia include a lack of job opportunities, a slow-moving bureaucracy, and a lack of modern infrastructure. The average cost of living for an expat is around $1,000-$1,500 per month. This includes rent, utilities, food, and other basic expenses.

What do I need to know about living in Macedonia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Macedonia, they said:

"Before retiring in Macedonia, expats should familiarize themselves with the local language, as English is not widely spoken. It is also important to research the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of healthcare and other services. Additionally, expats should be aware of the local laws and regulations, as well as the visa requirements for staying in the country. Finally, it is important to research the cultural norms and customs of the area, as well as the climate and weather patterns," commented one expat who made the move to Macedonia.
