Living in Haiti

By Betsy Burlingame

Last updated on Feb 01, 2024

Summary: The approximate population of Haiti is 11.2 million people. The largest cities in Haiti are Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haïtien, Carrefour, Delmas, and Pétionville. Expats love living in Haiti for its vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and friendly people. Life in Haiti is often described as chaotic, but also full of life and energy. Popular foods in Haiti include griot (fried pork), tassot (fried goat), and akra (fried plantains). The cons of living in Haiti include a lack of infrastructure, high crime rates, and a lack of access to basic services. The average cost of living for an expat is around $1,000-$1,500 per month. This includes rent, food, transportation, and other basic expenses.

What do I need to know about living in Haiti?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Haiti, they said:

"Before retiring in Haiti, expats should be aware of the country's political and economic situation. It is important to research the cost of living and the availability of healthcare and other services. Expats should also be aware of the cultural differences between Haiti and their home country, and be prepared to adjust to a new way of life. Additionally, expats should be aware of the potential for natural disasters, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, and take steps to ensure their safety. Finally, expats should be aware of the language barrier and consider taking language classes to help them better integrate into the local community," commented one expat who made the move to Haiti.

"Haiti is very poor. Unless you have verified commitment here....life is rough and not currently a place to excel unless you are invloved with third/fourth world development, and have verified commitment of employment. Haiti can be a very good place to begin new international business. If you are a foreign company willing to establish new business in Haiti, there are many great incentives, tax breaks, etc. that attempt to promote foriegn investments. The business climate can be cumbersome to navigate, but there are very attractive terms and incentives for those that can prevail," remarked one expat living in Petion-ville, Haiti.
