What are emergency services like in Bermuda?

When we asked about emergency services, members in Bermuda wrote:

"King Edward Memorial Hospital is the only general hospital on the island. It has the usual departments one would expect and most basic problems can be managed on island. Many people however choose or are advised to go overseas for surgery or complex problems. All medical care on island is private, bar a minority of local people with just the basic government health cover. The hospital is on the outskirts of Hamilton city and within 12 miles of any part on the island. A second hospital, Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute looks after mental health problems and learning disabilities. This is in one of the central parishes. Psychiatric care is covered by insurance. Locally problems such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, renal dialysis, orthopaedic surgery, childbirth, paediatrics are all covered in the same fashion as a district general hospital would cover back in UK. You do have an element of choice afforded through your insurance - for example I have one friend who had knee replacement on island and another who went to Boston," commented one expat living in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Will I need to travel to see a specialist?

"Boston, New York and UK are the common places to go for off island medical care. Quality there is of course excellent," mentioned another expat in Hamilton.

Answer this Question

Are common prescription medications available in Bermuda?

"Prescription medicines are covered through your insurance. This is one area which is better than UK as there is no co-pay for common prescription items, compared with the standard prescription charge in UK. Some that are OTC in UK are not available without prescription here - for example oral antifungals. Others surprisingly are available OTC such as some sleeping tablets and strong laxatives. Many vitamins are available in pharmacies," remarked another expat in Hamilton.

What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Bermuda?

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Bermuda about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said:

"When expecting or thinking of having a baby in Bermuda, it is important to consult a doctor or hospital first. This is to ensure that they understand the local birthing and medical regulations. In addition, joining a local expecting parents group can be beneficial. These parents support each other during the whole pregnancy, labour and delivery process. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the island’s hospital systems to choose the best option for you and your baby. Additionally, families should also research the available options for pre and post-natal services and shops for when their baby arrives. Finally, it’s important to stay connected to the expat community and reach out for support if needed," explained one expat living in Bermuda.

Are healthcare services good in Bermuda?

We asked people if they have access to good medical care in Bermuda. They wrote:

"Healthcare services in Bermuda are amongst the finest in the world, and are provided by both public and private providers. Bermuda’s public healthcare system is managed by the Ministry of Health and funded by a mix of public insurance and corporate and individual contributions. It comprises two hospitals, with a third in the planning stages, as well as a number of health centres and primary care clinics. Bermuda also has a number of excellent private healthcare providers, many of which are internationally accredited, providing exceptional inpatient and outpatient care. Bermuda also boasts a network of dedicated health professionals and services, ranging from medical and specialist physicians, allied health professionals and allied medical services," explained one expat living in Bermuda.
