What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Nepal?

Many expats choose to live in larger cities such as Kathmandu, where they can find more modern housing options. When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Nepal, they said:

It is important to be aware of any potential risks associated with the purchase of the property, such as flooding or landslides. 7. It is important to be aware of any potential environmental issues that may be associated with the property. 8. It is important to be aware of any potential zoning or development restrictions that may be applicable to the property. 9. It is important to be aware of any potential restrictions on the transfer of the property. 10. It is important to be aware of any potential restrictions on the sale of the property," explained one person living in Nepal.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Nepal?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Nepal, they said...

"Foreigners are allowed to own property in Nepal, but there are certain restrictions. Foreigners are not allowed to own land, but they can own buildings and apartments. They must obtain permission from the Department of Land Reform and Management in order to purchase a property. Foreigners are also required to have a valid visa and a work permit in order to purchase a property. Additionally, they must have a Nepali citizen as a guarantor in order to purchase a property," explained one person living in Nepal.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Nepal what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Nepal, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, stove, and washing machine. Other common appliances that may be included are a microwave, air conditioner, and water heater. Depending on the property, some landlords may also provide furniture such as beds, tables, and chairs," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Nepal.
