What do I need to know before moving to Amman?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Amman, they said:

"Expats moving to Amman should be aware of the local culture and customs, as Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country with conservative values. It is important to dress modestly, especially for women, and to respect local traditions and religious practices. The official language in Amman is Arabic, but English is widely spoken, especially in business and tourist areas. However, learning some basic Arabic phrases can be helpful in daily life and can help expats better integrate into the local community. The cost of living in Amman is relatively affordable compared to other major cities in the region, but housing can be expensive, particularly in popular expat neighborhoods. It is advisable to research the different areas of the city and to consider factors such as proximity to work, schools, and amenities when choosing a place to live. Healthcare in Amman is generally of a high standard, with both public and private hospitals available. Expats should ensure they have comprehensive health insurance, as private healthcare can be expensive. The education system in Jordan offers both public and private schools, with many expats choosing to send their children to international schools that follow a foreign curriculum. It is important to research schools and apply early, as spaces can be limited. Amman has a relatively safe and stable environment, but expats should still take precautions to ensure their personal safety. This includes being aware of local laws and customs, avoiding large gatherings and demonstrations, and keeping informed about the security situation in the region. Public transportation in Amman is limited, with most people relying on taxis or private cars to get around. Expats may want to consider purchasing a car for convenience, but should be prepared for heavy traffic and sometimes challenging driving conditions. The climate in Amman is generally mild, with hot summers and cool, wet winters. Expats should be prepared for the seasonal changes and ensure their housing has adequate heating and cooling systems. Finally, it is important for expats to be patient and adaptable when moving to Amman, as the pace of life and bureaucracy can be slower than in other countries. Building a network of local and expat friends can help ease the transition and provide valuable support during the adjustment period," remarked one expat in Amman, Jordan.
