Summary: Moving to Discovery Bay, Hong Kong: Expats, retirees and digital nomads talk about everything you need to know before moving to Discovery Bay.
What do I need to know before moving to Discovery Bay?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Discovery Bay, they said:
"Discovery Bay is a residential area located on the island of Lantau in Hong Kong, known for its expat community and resort-like atmosphere. It is a car-free zone, so residents and visitors travel by foot, bicycle, or the internal bus system. The primary language spoken in Discovery Bay is English, making it easier for expats from English-speaking countries to settle in. The cost of living in Discovery Bay is relatively high, with housing being the most significant expense. There are various types of accommodations available, from high-rise apartments to standalone houses, but all come with a hefty price tag. The area is family-friendly with several international schools, playgrounds, and other child-friendly amenities. It also offers a range of recreational facilities such as a golf club, marina club, and a beach. Discovery Bay is well-connected to other parts of Hong Kong. A regular ferry service runs to Central Hong Kong, and there are also buses to Tung Chung and the airport. The community in Discovery Bay is tight-knit, with regular events and activities organized for residents. There are also numerous clubs and societies that expats can join to meet new people and integrate into the community. The area has a range of dining and shopping options, including a large supermarket that stocks international products. However, for more extensive shopping, residents often travel to Central Hong Kong or Tung Chung. Healthcare facilities in Discovery Bay are limited, so for serious medical issues, residents will need to travel to other parts of Hong Kong. Lastly, while Discovery Bay offers a more relaxed lifestyle compared to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong city, it may feel isolated for some. Therefore, it's essential to consider your lifestyle preferences before deciding to move there," said one expat in Discovery Bay.
