The village is known for its friendly locals and beautiful natural surroundings, including the nearby Shipstern Nature Reserve and the stunning Caribbean Sea. There is a small but active expat community in Sarteneja, with retirees from various countries, particularly the United States and Canada. This community often organizes social events and activities, providing opportunities for retirees to socialize and make new friends. Cultural attractions in Sarteneja include the local handcrafts, particularly the boat-building industry that the village is known for. There are also several Mayan ruins in the surrounding area that can be explored. The local cuisine, which is a blend of Mayan, Mestizo, Creole, and Garifuna influences, is another highlight. Recreational activities in Sarteneja are largely centered around the outdoors.
