What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Overseas retirees would advise those considering retiring abroad to thoroughly research the country's culture, laws, and language so that assimilation is not a difficult process. Additional advice would be to speak with other people who have lived in the country, make local contacts, journey to the location and live it out a bit to get a sense of the realities of the place, and confirm health care resources. Additionally, make sure to look into a banking system and residency options, and also make arrangements for pension or other retirement income to be accessible abroad. Set a budget, understand the taxes, and get to know the cost of everyday living. Finally, don’t rush - carefully research the process and thoroughly vet decisions," said a retiree who moved to Jurmala, Latvia.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Jurmala?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Jurmala is the language barrier. Although English is widely spoken, the official language of Latvia is Latvian, which can be difficult to learn for those who are not native speakers. Additionally, the cost of living in Jurmala is relatively high, making it difficult for retirees to stretch their savings. Furthermore, the climate in Jurmala can be quite cold and wet, which may not be suitable for those who prefer warmer climates. Finally, the healthcare system in Latvia is not as advanced as in other countries, making it difficult for retirees to access the medical care they need," said a person in Jurmala.
