What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Do your research and be sure to familiarize yourself with the policies, laws and regulations of your desired country of retirement. Talk to those who have experienced living abroad, seek the advice of the professionals, and make sure that your financial situation can accommodate the cost of living in your chosen location. Make sure you understand the local customs and language, and qualify for any residency and visa requirements in the country before making any arrangements. Enjoy the culture and lifestyle by mingling with locals, as this will help you to discover the best spots and hidden gems. Lastly, be mindful that repatriation and medical treatments can be costly, so it's important to consider your long term health requirements before making any decisions," said one retiree in Cebu.

"I think it is not for every one. For example, I think older women may not enjoy a place like Cebu as much as I do..," commented one retiree living in Cebu City, Philippines.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Cebu?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Cebu is the language barrier. English is not widely spoken in the area, so it can be difficult to communicate with locals. Additionally, the cost of living in Cebu is relatively high, so retirees may need to adjust their budget accordingly. Furthermore, the infrastructure in Cebu is not as developed as in other parts of the world, so access to certain amenities may be limited. Finally, the climate in Cebu can be quite hot and humid, so retirees may need to adjust to the weather," said one retiree in Cebu.

"The challenges are less for me in Philippines because I have been visiting here regularly for over 20 years. I saved a fair amount working between the ages of 48-55. That, and social security in 2019 and I am set. The key for me is to be able to get away from some of the local nonsense, i.e. noise, pollution, scammers. I build a buffer from that," commented one retiree living in Cebu City, Philippines.
