What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Barranquilla?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Barranquilla about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Colombia. The country has a mix of public and private healthcare, with many expats opting for private health insurance to ensure access to the best facilities and doctors. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician who speaks your language or with whom you feel comfortable communicating. This will make your prenatal visits and the delivery process much smoother. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fourthly, it's advisable to take prenatal classes, which can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood. These classes are often available in English or other languages. Fifthly, make sure to understand the maternity leave policies in Colombia if you are working. The country has quite generous maternity leave provisions, but it's important to know your rights and obligations. Lastly, try to connect with other expat parents in Barranquilla. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors, hospitals, or services. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," explained one expat living in Barranquilla, Colombia.
