What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Old Road?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Old Road about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Antigua and Barbuda. The country has a mix of public and private healthcare facilities, but the quality of care can vary. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, you should find a reliable obstetrician or midwife early in your pregnancy. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or your local friends. Make sure to communicate your birth plan clearly to your healthcare provider. Thirdly, prenatal care is crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and regular exercise can help ensure a healthy pregnancy. Fourthly, consider taking childbirth and parenting classes. These can provide valuable information and help you prepare for the arrival of your baby. Fifthly, if you're planning to give birth in a hospital, visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the facilities and procedures. Lastly, after the baby is born, register the birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. This will ensure that your child has the appropriate citizenship and legal documents. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with proper preparation and support, it can also be a rewarding one," explained one expat living in Old Road, Antigua & Barbuda.
