What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Cap Estate?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Cap Estate about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saint Lucia. The island has both public and private healthcare facilities, but the quality of care can vary. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, you should start looking for a reliable obstetrician or midwife early on in your pregnancy. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or consult with your home country's embassy. Thirdly, prenatal care is crucial. Regular check-ups and scans are necessary to ensure the health of both the mother and the baby. Make sure to follow the recommended schedule for these appointments. Fourthly, consider the language barrier. While English is widely spoken in Saint Lucia, medical terminology can sometimes be confusing. If you're not comfortable with English, consider bringing a translator to your appointments. Fifthly, plan for the birth. Some hospitals in Saint Lucia may not offer the same level of comfort or facilities as those in your home country. It might be worth considering a trip back home for the delivery or looking into private hospitals on the island. Lastly, after the birth, register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy as soon as possible. This will ensure that your child has the appropriate citizenship and can access services in your home country if needed," said another expat in Cap Estate, Saint Lucia.
