What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Akureyri?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Akureyri about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Iceland. Prenatal care in Akureyri, like the rest of Iceland, is of a high standard and is provided by both midwives and doctors. Ensure that you have the necessary health insurance coverage. If you are a resident in Iceland, you should be covered by the Icelandic health insurance. It's advisable to start your prenatal care as soon as you know you're pregnant. Regular check-ups are important for the health of both the mother and the baby. You should also consider taking prenatal classes. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood. They are often available in English. If you don't speak Icelandic, you might want to find a doctor or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during this period. Hospitals in Akureyri are well-equipped for childbirth. However, it's a good idea to visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the environment. Breastfeeding is highly encouraged in Iceland. There are numerous support groups and lactation consultants available if you need help. Lastly, remember to register the birth of your baby within six months at the National Registry. This is important for your child's legal status and citizenship. In terms of social support, there are various parent groups and activities in Akureyri. Joining these groups can provide you with a network of support and friendship. Remember to take time to enjoy this special period in your life. Iceland is a beautiful country with a lot to offer to young families," said a member in Akureyri, Iceland.
