What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Port Antonio?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Port Antonio about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Jamaica. While the country has a number of public and private hospitals, the quality of care can vary. Therefore, it's advisable to research and choose a hospital in Port Antonio or nearby cities that is known for its maternity care. Secondly, ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity and newborn care. Some insurance policies may not cover these services, or may only provide partial coverage, so it's crucial to understand your policy. Thirdly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife. They can provide valuable support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any cultural or language barriers that may arise. Fourthly, it's important to understand the cultural norms and expectations around childbirth in Jamaica. For example, it's common for Jamaican women to give birth without pain medication, so if you prefer to have an epidural or other form of pain relief, you'll need to discuss this with your healthcare provider in advance. Fifthly, make sure to keep all your prenatal appointments and follow your doctor's advice for a healthy pregnancy. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances like alcohol and tobacco. Lastly, once your baby is born, you'll need to register the birth with the local authorities to obtain a birth certificate. This is also the time to start the process of securing citizenship or residency for your child, if applicable. It's advisable to consult with a legal expert to understand the process and requirements," commented one expat who made the move to Port Antonio, Jamaica.
