What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Umm Al Quwain?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Umm Al Quwain if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Umm Al Quwain, it is considered disrespectful to show public displays of affection. This includes hugging, kissing, or even holding hands in public. It's also important to dress modestly, especially for women, as revealing clothing can be seen as offensive. Avoid using your left hand for eating or passing objects, as it is considered unclean. Do not consume alcohol in public places, as it is illegal and can lead to severe penalties. Also, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during the holy month of Ramadan, as it is considered disrespectful. Avoid criticizing or making negative comments about the UAE government, the royal families, local customs, and religions. Freedom of speech is not as widely accepted as in some western countries, and such actions could lead to legal trouble. Do not take photographs of people, especially women, without their permission. It is considered a serious invasion of privacy. Also, avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and airports, as it can be seen as a security threat. Avoid making any gestures that could be interpreted as obscene or offensive. This includes pointing your foot or showing the sole of your shoe to someone, which is considered a sign of disrespect. Lastly, always be punctual for meetings and appointments. Being late is seen as a sign of disrespect. However, understand that the concept of time may be more relaxed in the UAE, and your hosts may not always be on time," commented one expat who made the move to Umm Al Quwain, the UAE.
