What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Sosua?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Sosua if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Sosua, Dominican Republic, it's important to respect the local culture and customs. Avoid making derogatory comments about the country or its people, as Dominicans are very proud of their heritage. It's considered rude to interrupt someone while they're speaking, so always wait for your turn to talk. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and race, as these can lead to heated debates. Dominicans value personal space, so avoid standing too close to someone or touching them without their consent. It's considered impolite to refuse an invitation to a home or event, so try to accept whenever possible. Avoid wearing revealing clothing in public places, as this is considered disrespectful. It's also considered rude to arrive on time for social events, as Dominicans usually arrive late. However, for business meetings, it's important to be punctual. Avoid being overly loud or boisterous in public places, as this can be seen as disrespectful. Lastly, always remember to say "please" and "thank you", as Dominicans place a high value on politeness and good manners," said a member in Sosua, the Dominican Republic.
