What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sosua?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sosua about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in the Dominican Republic. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often providing a higher standard of care. Therefore, you might want to consider private health insurance. Secondly, ensure you have a reliable and competent obstetrician. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Make sure the doctor is fluent in your language to avoid any communication barriers. Thirdly, prenatal care is crucial. Regular check-ups and tests should be done to monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. Fourthly, be aware that the Dominican Republic may not have the same level of neonatal care as your home country. If there are complications during the pregnancy, you may need to consider traveling to a country with more advanced medical facilities. Fifthly, understand the local customs and traditions related to childbirth. This can help you integrate better into the local community and make the most of your experience. Lastly, make sure all the necessary paperwork is in order for your baby's birth certificate and passport. This can be a complex process, so it's advisable to start early and seek legal advice if necessary," commented one expat who made the move to Sosua, the Dominican Republic.
